The Battle for the Republic of China was a spectacular film for its time, no less than two major studios (Central of Taiwan and Shaw of Hongkong)collaborated to bring this heroic historic battle(s) to the screen. Granted the comeon was to see the popular male stars in another spectacular action film, this production did succeed in telling the patriotic heros' sacrificial love for China in the change from corrupt monarchy to a democratic republic in step with the modern world. The film suffers from an overblatant music score and theatrical speeches delivered by over zealous actors when a more subtle interpretation would suffice. The DVD release with its panned and scanned squeez succeeded in destroying all the well-composed action scenes. WAKE UP ! Can we have a widescreen version of this great film on DVD instead of this truncated mess ??? |
