October 1989 was a bad time to fall into a coma if you lived in East Germany – and this is precisely what happens to Alex's proudly socialist mother. Alex has a big problem on his hands when she suddenly awakens eight months later. Her heart is so weak that any shock might kill her. And what could be more shocking than the fall of the Wall and the triumph of capitalism in her beloved East Germany? To save his mother, Alex transforms the family apartment into an island of the past, a kind of socialist museum where his mother is lovingly duped into believing that nothing has changed. What begins as a little white lie turns into a major scam as Alex's sister and selected neighbors are recruited to maintain the pretense – and keep her in the belief that Lenin really did win after all!

Laughter in tears
|
I have watched Goodbye Lenin twice in cinema. It is now one of my favourite German films. I think it's a tragic-comedy. I laughed a lot throughout the film, yet I could also feel the sadness deep down. Alex is a lovely son, and his mother is a great woman, I think, she does whatever she can to love her country. Even when her sickness worsens, she thinks of how to help those "refugees from the west". But what I love most is Alex's friend, Denise. His performance in those fake T.V. programs made me laugh almost to death. ("Denis" visited Hong Kong when Goodbye Lenin was showed in the Art Center and he came to meet us that night. The audience applauded for 2 minutes!) Overall speaking, this is a film about something tragic and it is supposed to be "heavy", yet the director makes you laugh over the matters. I think it is as toughing as the Italian film Life is Beautiful. |
