　　故事以主人翁齊平來到一所擁有優良教學傳統的男子學校教拉丁文為開端。齊平先生態度認真但舉止在學生眼裡卻有些笨拙，剛開始被學生捉弄，經過一些事件之後卻得到學生的愛戴。齊平實行愛的教育與校長認為壞學生就應體罰完全背離。

　　在一次休假的旅程中齊平認識了凱西，齊平溫文有禮，而凱西活潑談使雙方互相吸引著，遂結為夫妻一同回到學校，在校園裡成為人人稱羨之神仙眷侶。無奈好景不常，凱西在分娩過程中與胎兒雙雙不保。齊平從得知即將當父親的雀躍一下掉入痛失妻兒的深淵之中。此後的齊平也沒有再婚，全副精力都放在學生身上，視每位學生都如自己兒子一般。若干年後，第一任校長去世，新接任的校長唯利是圖的改革讓齊平很難接受，學校課程也有了變動，尤其以往鍛鍊身體的體育課改為軍事訓練，讓一向愛好和平的齊平更痛心疾首，不過因全國上下籠罩在民族主義之下，齊平亦無法改變現狀而萌生去職之意...。

　　電影以許多事件道出齊平為人師表的理念，並且將其一生奉獻給教育，在他孜孜不倦的教導下，學生一個個成為社會棟樑，也由此闡述了教育的理念。
