YesAsia Editorial Description
In the KBS TV series Goodbye Solo, a diverse group of characters from different generations, each hailing from a variety of backgrounds, live out their seemingly unrelated lives, only to find themselves connecting with one another in surprising ways! Chun Jung Myung (Fashion 70s) stars as Kim Min Ho, a gregarious young man born into a life of privilege. Although the son of a prominent businessman, he decides to make it on his own as a waiter at a café named "Sky." Chung Soo Hee (played by Yoon So Yi from Tell Me You Love Me) falls in love with Min Ho; there is one problem though - he's both a pal and a roommate of her boyfriend, Yoo Ji Ahn (Lee Han), a man whose one wish in life is to relieve the financial burden plaguing his disabled parents and younger brother.
As if that weren't complicated enough, there's the outgoing, yet self-doubting Choi Mi Ri (Kim Min Hee) who is actually Min Ho's first love. Even so, she now finds herself in love with a penitent gangster named Kang Ho Chul (Lee Jae Ryong). Joining this ragtag group of characters is Oh Young Sook (played by Bae Jong Ok, from My Trembling Heart), a woman who disguises herself behind a lie. Connecting all these disparate strands is the mute owner of a local eating establishment, an old woman named Mi Young (Na Moon Hee of My Lovely Sam Soon fame). When taken as a whole, the separate plots of Goodbye Solo begin to reveal a common theme - the idea that everyone is beautiful just the way they are!

This drama attempts to send a message that any human being is beautiful by just existing in this world. People's desire to have their say in everything, to succeed and to be beautiful stems from their deep-rooted disbelief in themselves. They are unable to love themselves the way they are. The underlying reason of the loss of interest in life is the disappointment with people. But even those who get disappointed with other human beings are negligent in loving their own selves.
The main character, Kim Min-ho (played by Chun Jung-myung), was born into a family of a business tycoon but his family turned away from him because he was an illegitimate child. While having a hard time because of her mother's re-marriages, Chung Soo-hee (played by Yoon So-yi) falls in love with Min-ho, who turns out to be a friend of her boyfriend, Yoo Ji-ahn (played by Lee Han). Frivolous Choi Mi-ri (played by Kim Min-hee) loves timid gangster Kang Ho-chul (played by Lee Jae-ryong), and agonizes a lot over her lack of self-confidence. Oh Young-sook (played by Bae Jong-ok) calls herself "crazy" and disguises herself in a lie. All these people are linked together by the mute owner of an eatery in the neighborhood, an old woman named Mi-young (played by Na Moon-hee).

Watching this drama is like getting a chance to get a peep into the lives of one's neighbours. This is a completely different type of drama...and I must say I did really enjoy it. In most dramas, the focus is on one or two main characters, but here, there are seven main characters. All of different age groups and different backgrounds. There is a bartender ( Kim Min Hao) who is a rich man's son, a gangster, an art designer( Xiu Xi), an enigmatic and mysterious middle aged woman, a pub owner(Mei Li),a deaf mute old lady and a man who hides behind a mask through lies( Zhi Ann). The first two episodes begin slowly...but as the story unfolds, you begin to get more curious. Questions like: Who is sending the smses to Xiu Xi, the art designer. Is the deaf mute really mute? Who is the lady in black who is trailing her? Why is the middle aged lady behaving weirdly? Watching the drama is like eating a multi layered ice cream cake, with each layer satisfying more of your appetite. This is not your typical family drama, love story or revenge drama which we commonly get get from Korea. It is a peep into life...what makes one behave in a certain way. What are the skeletons in their lives...what and why do the characters behave the way they do. It is a very practical and real story that anyone can relate to. It is a story that is very much like a part of our daily lives. Strong script and very realistic. Beautiful. |
