The feel-good movie to end all feel-good movies, Gorgeous is contrived, artificial, has nothing to do with real life, and contains numerous groan-inducing moments of sloppy sentimentality. That said, I couldn't name a 1999 movie that I love more. The story concerns Shu Qi's journey to Hong Kong to find the author of a love letter that washed up on the beach outside her parents' restaurant in Taiwan. A chain of circumstances lands her in the arms of millionaire recycling mogul, Jackie Chan, and while Jackie usually seasons his action movies with a bit of romance, this movie is a romantic comedy with action scenes thrown in on the side. Jackie and Shu Qi look, respectively, older and younger than their ages, giving their love scenes all the sparkle of walking in on your grandfather and his trophy girlfriend. They do okay, but it's the supporting actors who shine. Tony Leung Chiu-wai demonstrates why he's a comic virtuoso with his always flustered hair dresser who helps Shu Qi, against his better judgment, in the name of love. Hong Kong pop star, William So, plays the dopey boyfriend Shu Qi left behind, and Elaine Jin plays her mom (she also played moms in 1999's Tempting Heart and Metade Fumaca). Taiwanese great, Chan Chungyung (who starred in Hou Hsiao-hsien's City of Sadness), plays Shu Qi's dad with all the bluster of a boiled potato, and Tats Lau plays Jackie's bloodless personal assistant. Emil Chau plays Jackie's nemesis with great gusto. Shadowed by his gang of confused goons (led by a bald Ken Lo), he's constantly tangling with Jackie, mouthing "call me" as he struts away. Bradley Allen, the only Caucasian member of Jackie Chan's stunt team, turns in a charming performance as a foreign fighter, smaller than Jackie, imported to humiliate Chan. Stephen Chow even shows up in a cameo that's side-splitting. The secret weapon of this flick isn't the action or the romance between the two pampered leads, but the general feeling of goodwill and humanity amongst all the characters that makes Gorgeous a true feel-good movie. Feeling good about a world where everything's clean, recycling pays, dolphins don't kill children, waiters are happy being waiters, henchmen hang out together, rivals take time to listen to one another's problems and offer advice, and combatants follow the rules of a good clean fight. "No dirty tricks," says Bradley Allen to Jackie, but he needn't worry. You couldn't find dirt in this movie with a microscope. by Grady Hendrix |

Even though I consider myself a fan of Shu Qi and Tony Leung Chiu Wai, I never gave a second thought to watch any of Jackie Chan's movies. As luck would have it I came across Shu Qi, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, and Jackie Chan in their fabulously made collaboration Gorgeous which assembles various film genres including comedy, martial arts, and romance with surprisingly fresh results. Shu Qi portrays exuberant Abu who chases after her knight in shining armor after she receives a romantic message in a bottle from Hong Kong at her rather remote Taiwanese village. She heads for Hong Kong, not knowing that the message was meant for a guy as the sender (Tony Leung Chiu Wai, in an over-the-top role) prefers male partners. Just when it seems as if Abu's fairytale trip has come to an abrupt end, she stumbles into C. N. Chan (Jackie Chan), a well-to-do Hong Kong businessman tired of life's triviality. Can Abu's charms and lovely appearance leave a lasting impression on the happy-go-lucky playboy? Not as action-filled as some of Chan's other pure martial arts fare, Gorgeous still has some very stunning battle scenarios going for it, including fights against much smaller fighter-for-hire Alan (Bradley James Allan) whose appearance may be a bit deceiving. Packing a good punch combined with swift kicks, he at least gives Jackie a good workout in the film. A little reminiscent of Bruce Lee's showdown against Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon, this movie offers a somewhat relaxed take in which Chan gets a few bruises before things start to look better for him in the later return match. Balancing between amusing and more emotional moments with occasional martial arts bravura presented by Chan, Gorgeous promises to charm with the winning smiles and expressions of Shu Qi. Tony Leung Chiu wonderfully supports the silver-screen couple with his relaxed but engaging portrayal of gay hair stylist Albert. Richie Jen also gives a memorable performance in his role as Abu's lovelorn village neighbor, while Emil Chow seems to have enjoyed acting as Chan's counterpart, C. N.'s cunning but overall good-hearted business rival. Underlined with a honey-sweet music score and a trademark Canto-pop duet by Kit Chan and William So, Gorgeous stays true to its title. |

| Good on Jackie for trying a different role. He made this movie after Rush Hour and you just can't stop wishing and hoping that all fairy tale love stories end like this. Don't all girls wish they are in Shu Qi's shoes where she can have her cake and eat it too. Tony Leung was fabulous as the gay makeup artist and his dialogue with Shu Qi and the scene at Jackie's apartment was side-splitting. Love Jackie's hot bod even at 52. By the way, the dolphins are real not cgi as mentioned. They won an award for their theme song and I couldn't get it out of my head weeks after. |

| Had to adjust the expectation while watching it. Still don't think Jackie Chan is suit for the role as a rich and classy guy, and in a romantic relationship. Rather, I enjoyed watch Shu Qi's performance, and the guest appearance of many other stars. A quite boring movie, nothing would make you feel excited, even the fight scenes. But you'll enjoy it somehow if you can concentrate on Shu Qi. |

This movie reminded me of why I always try to remind myself to smile. You are stronger within yourself when you are happy. It was a movie about following what your instincts tell you to do, then about allowing youself to follow them. Mr Chan a business man is forgetting the enjoyment of life and Bu is young and still looking at everything as being full of joy and excitement. She can see that Mr chan still has this in him and so the love story of two lost soles joining begins. Damn brilliant story I loved it. Good to see Jackie being the suave sexy guy that I love seeing/hearing him be,that involves mostly written acting, rather than seeing him be his agile self. I love listening to his voice..... |

An unconventional story-line for Jackie which is light-hearted, romantic and has just a touch of action. The pairing of Jackie with young, bubbly and fresh-faced Shu Qi works astonishingly well. Admittedly, an unrealistic fairytale, but how many have a hilarious Tong Leung playing a very camp gay? Emil's contribution to the film added further humour without going over the top. All in all, an amusing film, not a typical laugh-out-loud Jackie Chan movie, but sweet enough to make you smile and feel warm and gooey inside. Worth a watch! Definately a film to pull out when the weather is cold wet & rainy! |
