Great film
The first time i saw this film was when it was first realeased back in the early 90s? It was a bad hired copy from the local video man and the film ended in the middle of the battle scene at the end... for all these years i thought the film actually ended like that and bcos i have read a few reviews before from other people saying the ending was quite abrupt too... But WOW now that i managed to watch this new DVD version, I am amazed at how great this film is... even though only missed about 10 minutes of the ending al these years. but it does make it complete to see an actual ending though it would be nice to a sequel to this great film!!! I really miss these great films by Tsui Hark and Joey Wong and Maggie cheung!! PS. otice how rgeat this film was and the main male actor is unheard of even at the time of the release of the film?! Haha... but he's rgeat anyway! Don't see many great new actors/actresses these days.

Masterpiece
A genuinely great film: imaginative, spectacular, humourous and tragic, this will not be like anything you have seen before. Some viewers may dislike the lurid colours but they lend the film a sense of otherworldliness wholly appropriate to the story and to its characters - the Green Snake and the White Snake who have descended to earth and the Buddhist priest struggling with his inner demons. Joey Wang and Maggie Cheung have never, simply never, been more beautiful on the screen. Not only visually does 'Green Snake' excel - the score by James Wong Jim is astonishing, with the introductory song peformed by Winnie Hsin and the later dance piece by Sarah Chen stunning both in their beauty and in their harmonization with the images they accompany. If Tsui Hark had made only this film, he would deserve to be remembered for ever. Not a sugar-coated inconsequential fairy tale, the director has fashioned an unforgettable romance of forbidden love assailed by monkish inflexibility and the pettiness of the world. The closing image is extremely powerful, only to be compared in its potency to the conclusion of the German film 'Aguirre, Wrath of God'. Nothing more to be said - a fabulous fabulous film.

Brilliant and sad story with great performances
This is probably one of the best movies with Joey Wong that I have seen except maybe of course the classis Chinese Ghost Story. Joey and Maggie Cheung are possitively radient and lucious in this movie. Although this movie has some overly colorful cinematagraphy and the special effects are pretty cheesy, the plot and the performance from the two leading ladies more than make up for the flaws. If you are a Joey Wong fan then this is a must see because I do not think it is possible to find Joey in a sexier or more noble role. Joey Wong's performance and her sad conclusion actually made my eyes water like crazy.

Okay movie
It was an okay movie. I like the story line a lot, but I thought the color was really bad. If you really want to see it than buy it, otherwise it's not worth your money.

great
shouldn't be this under-rated. the picturesque sceneries and also the incredible story plot! it is maggie cheung in this movie which caught our attention. joey wong is good and can be better cos' of the role given - it was brigitte lin who was given the original white snake and rejected! funny in a way and it's great.

best
best
i think this is one of the best version of white snake and green snake ever made. joey wong plays her seductive, wise, action, emotional, cunning role so perfect its almost unbelieveable. and maggie also does a great performance. however, it was the story plot, the scenery, the action, the romance, the suspence, and finally the tradgedy of this movie that makes it so worth buying and so watch buying. i can not wait until peony pavillion comes out!!...its joey wang's last performance man!!!
