Professional Review of "Guilty (ALBUM+DVD)(Japan Version)"

January 16, 2008

This professional review refers to Guilty (Japan Version)
Despite starting 2008 with bad health news, Japanese pop diva Ayumi Hamasaki's record company sure knows how to build up buzz. In 2007, she led a successful Asian concert tour and gave away her first screen kiss in a short film shot in Hong Kong, and now she's officially launching her 10th year in show biz with her heavily promoted 9th full-length album Guilty. If you walked around Tokyo in the last weeks of 2007, there's a good chance that you saw at least one advertisement for the album. Just like the advertisements themselves, Guilty is a full-on pop assault on the senses that shows one of Japan's most successful pop artists is still going strong after 10 years.

While Ayumi's style of energetic J-pop has become a unique hybrid of rock and dance, the tracks in Guilty lean considerably towards rock, following closely with the current trend of the American top 40 charts. The tone is set up nicely with opening interlude Mirror (Track 1), which starts off nice and quiet before unleashing a guitar-driven attack on the ears. Unlike many Japanese albums which string together a few singles with some side tracks to make a full-length album, Guilty actually features multiple interludes that work at building a certain atmosphere throughout the album, including a minute-long introduction for Marionette (Track 9), a mid-beat rock ballad with a powerful arrangement that takes it time to build to its climax. However, neither the composition nor Ayumi's vocal are able match up to the song's intended effect.

Most tracks on Guilty are on the darker side, with even the ballads getting the rock guitar treatment. untitled ~for her~ (Track 14), one of the album's three ballads, does successfully stray from the overall formula without interrupting the flow (it's also the last track of the album); it even recalls early Ayumi songs in both composition and vocal style. Over the years, Ayumi's voice seems to have matured by growing increasingly towards a vibrato while retaining her signature high tone. The most apparent of this is in ballad Together When (track 7), where her voice can't seem to hold a note without resorting to short stutters or extended vibrato. While one can say it helps deliver the emotions of the song, this technique really only helps during fast songs which require a certain thump. Nevertheless, Ayumi remains a solid singer even in the ballads, though only Together When really manages to stand out among the three.

Vocals being one of the reasons, the more successful genre on Guilty is the energetic fast track. With crowded arrangements and catchy hooks, they effectively engage listeners with pulsating energy. Powerful opening track (don't) Leave Me Alone (Track 2) is a good follow-up to Mirror in establishing the general tone of the album. Meanwhile, decision (Track 4) is a full-energy rock track that builds an effective contrast between quiet and powerful in its chorus. On the other hand, title track GUILTY (Track 5) follows the album's inspiration too closely, and ends up sounding more like a female imitation of a Linkin Park song.

The more upbeat fast pop genre doesn't show up until Track 11 in the form of glitter. Rightly placed towards the end of the album, the song successfully stands on its own because it's so separated from the album's first section. Written as a single and released in the summer, the track features a cheerful arrangement to match its energetic melody, making it a perfect concert song for her upcoming tour. In fact, "energetic" is probably a good way to sum up Guilty in one word. Everything produced for the album - the overdone arrangements, Ayumi's diva-like delivery, the extravagant music videos - makes the album seem like an event unto itself, even without the blanketing advertisements in Tokyo. For an event album, no one should really expect Ayumi to find any musical breakthrough. This is a case where keeping things at business as usual can be considered a good thing, and Guilty certainly doesn't rock the boat. Instead, it's an entertaining pop album that satisfies loyal fans and has a few tracks that even the pickiest pop fan would like. For starting the year off with a bang, Guilty is a resounding success.

Recommended tracks: Mirror (Track 1), (don't)Leave me alone (Track 2), Together When... (Track 7), Marionette (Track 9), glitter (Track 11)

The best album in my whole lifetime! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This album is simply stunning.
I love it.I don't think that there is something that's missing in it at all.
From great package (covers, booklet,CD & DVD,inserts)to awesome and stunning tracks ever!
This was my first album ever, and I still don't regret buying it!

It's completely polished from beginning to end, having the first 5 tracks as rock songs, and then turning to 2 sad ballads and 1 mysterious song + interlude, and after that 2 awesome happy pop-ish songs, and for an end,a beautiful personal ballad.

You can completely enjoy this album because it offers lots of variant moods and feelings.

You have to buy it,it's something so briliant!

GUILTY CD+DVD review. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I really like this album and it's the first album from Ayumi that I ordered.
GUILTY is a more "rock-ish" album if you compare it with her other albums. GUILTY also includes the single talkin' 2 myself, glitter/fated and her first digital single Together When... .
If you buy this album I really recomment to listen to (don't) Leave me alone and Marionette.
My favorite videoclip on this album is Marionette.

OK Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I think its safe to say that this is Ayumi`s weakest CD to date. The songs just don`t have the trademark Ayumi brilliance. If you play 'Secret' & her best CD 'My Story' right after listening to this, you realise how poor 'Guilty' is. Shame really. Lets hope her next CD gets back on track.

GUILTY of yet another Success! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First of all, I am a loyal Ayu fan. I have followed her music since 1999, and as such, her music has been a part of various stages of my life. She is incredibly original and has a whimsical, fantasy-like nature about her. Her numerous videos and photo shoots will tell you this. Through all the years, I have always enjoyed her more edgier songs that had a more rock sound. I think she excels in this area because she captures emotion, power and it suits her vocals nicely. GUILTY really delivers more songs that have a rock-sound to it, and I have been waiting for this! Each album always has 1 or 2 rock songs, but this one delivers more!

But what I really like about Ayu is that each album has variety to it, meaning, you will get a couple songs with a dance beat, a couple ballads, a couple rock song and amazing musical interludes. This is her formula for success, and it works well. By constantly, and consistently, applying this formula, she keeps a lot of fans on-board. Some may not like her rock songs, but they love her pop songs, and vice versa. I happen to fall under the blanket of ALL genres, because I like variety. And no one can pull this off more exceptionally than Ayu!!

I don't really have any complaints, but I would have liked Mirror to have been a full length song. It just ROCKS. Sets the mood for the album and nicely transitions into the next song, but still, coulda been longer. Ayu, if you are reading this, you need to make some of your rock songs longer. (Like flower garden, hidden track on a previous album). Also, I would have liked 1 or 2 more new tracks. But this is not really anyone's fault except for AVEX....they push out her singles all year to make money, but by the time we get the album, as much as we love those songs, it is not "new" to the loyal fans. So we feel like we are only getting an album with 5 songs. But, I have to admit, going a year without any new music from Ayu would send me to the looney bin.

On a non-musical note, I love her short hair!!! Takes me back to her days of Evolution. Usually I think woman only look great and sexy with longish hair, but Ayu somehow can pull off any style, any hair colour...amazing. Love the short hair tousled. Sexy!

The bottom-line:
GUILTY is simply GUILTY of not having more "new" tracks. If you like rock music, this album is great. Will also make a great album to later remix as TRANCE or something. If you just like or love Ayu, I dont think you will be disappointed in this album. It has a more mature sound. Ayu's voice has matured too and she is not trying to hit notes that she shouldn't hit anymore (like her early days).

Impressive and beautiful Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm always hearing people say they want Ayu to do something different...but if she does something so-called "different", it wouldn't be Ayu, now would it? That's the reason for VARIETY, so when u feel like hearing something different, you listen to another artist and stop criticizing Ayu for being herself & doing her own thing. Ayumi Hamasaki does what she wants and writes the words that she's feeling at that point in her life. Every Ayu work is different and every one is special in its own way. "GUILTY" is no exception. This album is filled with wonderful rock songs that alot of fans have wanted for awhile now...but how come when they get what they want, it's still not good enough? "(don't) Leave Me Alone" and "Marionette" are probably two of her best songs she has ever done for an album yet not the best PVs. "Together When..." is one of Ayu's most unique and special ballads in a long while. "MY ALL" didn't give me the feeling I heard it before at all so I think it's wrong to speak for everyone else in your review and say it does. "Untitled ~for her~" is extremely sweet and it's cruel to insult because Ayu did write it for her friend who passed away recently; have a heart when it comes to this song. "GUILTY" is pretty good, but I'm not too found of the repetive chorus.

Indeed there are too many preludes for my liking, but oh well. I did long for more new tracks, but that's what's so great about Ayu; she leaves u wanting more. If she gave you everything you wanted in one album, then what's the point of buying any other albums?
