YesAsia Editorial Description
Acclaimed new-wave director Kirk Wong and Hong Kong mega-producer Tsui Hark team up for Gunmen, a hard-nosed action drama set in turbulent 1930s Shanghai. Versatile Tony Leung Ka Fai stars as Ding Chun Bee, an honorable, righteous cop in a time when honorable, righteous cops were in short supply. Finding corruption on all levels of the police force, he enlists his old war buddies (Waise Lee, Mark Cheng, and John Woo's award-winning film editor, David Wu!) to help him in his quest to bring solid justice to the streets of Shanghai. Opposing him is vicious opium smuggler Haye (Adam Cheng), who has an old score to settle with Ding, and will stop at nothing to exact his revenge. Co-starring Elizabeth Lee as a tragically doomed prostitute, and Carrie Ng as Ding's suffering wife. The highlight of Gunmen: tense shootouts reminiscent of Sam Peckinpah and John Woo, which comes as ultimate proof that Hong Kong heroic bloodshed isn't limited to eighties triad films!

Good Entertainment
Elizabeth Lee has a great body and I don't mind watching her all days in those skimmy outfits. But isn't her outfit (such as spaghetti strap) really ahead of that period's time? Overall this gangster-cop movie has lot of guns and violence; and they were executed at a fast pace. It is like watching a Chinese version of an Alain Delon movie from France. The script itself is not outstanding especially the stupid chase scene at the end. One has to ask how the gangster can miss so many shots at that slow-moving rickshaw. But for $5, I can't complain too much.

Gunmen Rocks!
Way back in the late 80's, this fine film by Kirk Wong was among those that helped get me hooked on the "New Wave" of Hong Kong action movies. So, perhaps I am looking at it now with a high degree of personal nostalgia; yet, I still think this movie stands up, today! The hyperkinetic and brilliantly staged action sequences still thrill. And though the pace of the film is quite rapid, the characters are still well drawn and perfectly acted! My only complaint is that the film seems to stop too abruptly. The period detail (the story is set in Shanghai during the 30's) is highly convincing, considering that the film was done on a tiny budget. In addition to the film itself being incredibly enjoyable, this DVD presentation is to commended, as well! The picture quality is superb, as is the sound quality (at least on the Cantonese audio track). If, like me, you are a great fan of HK flicks from the "classic" period of the late 80's and early 90's; and, if, like me, you are a fan of tales set in the wild city of Shanghai (circa 1920's and the 1930's)---then, Wong Che Keung's "Gunmen" simply cannot miss! Highly recommended.

this movie is one of the best
i kind of like its storyline but I hate the ending. It's so stupid how"dai gor" of the gang got shot by a LITTLE KID??????? It's very unrealistic there. Adam Cheng's performance was awesome!!!!! We often see his "innocent" and good side, but in here we see his "leadership, gangster, macho" side, it's very cool. He got his hair gelled, damn good looking!!!!!
