交通事故で母親を亡くしたエイミーは、１０年ぶりに再会した別居中で彫刻家の父、トーマスと暮らすことに。ある日、森で親を失くしたグースの卵を見つけたエイミーは、父親に内緒で卵をふ化させる。その日から彼女は１６羽のグースのママとなり、忘れかけていた笑顔が、彼女に戻りつつあった。しかし冬になれば、越冬のためグースたちを南へと渡らせなければならない。やがてトーマスが仲間と共に作り上げた超軽量飛行機が完成。これに乗ったエイミーと父、１６羽のグースは、ノース・カロライナを目指し、遥か９００ｋｍ南へと旅立った。
