Charming tale of loyal dog
Charming tale of loyal dog
|
I have seen the statue of Hachiko at Shibuya Station in Tokyo and for a long time have wanted to learn more of the story of this renowned dog. This film helps to fill in some of the details. Professor Ueno, a highly regarded professor of agricultural science at the Imperial University (now Tokyo University), had owned an Akita dog who had died. A friend of his, believing that the Professor would like a new dog, sent him a new-born full-blooded Akita pup. In fact, Prof. Ueno and his wife had decided not to get another dog. However, when the puppy arrived, Ueno grew so attached to it that he decided to keep it. Each day the dog would accompany him to the train station on the Professor's way to work and each evening the dog would wait at Shibuya station for his master's return. The film tells this story in loving and sometimes humorous detail. Unfortunately, after just two years, Prof. Ueno died of a stroke while he was at the university. Faithful dog Hachi waited at the station for him, but he did not return. Each day Hachi would return to the station to wait for his master. The dog became well-known after an article about him appeared in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. The film is, of course, quite sentimental and, unfortunately, a bit overlong. Much of the film's closing scenes seem repetitive, as we follow the repetitive actions of this loyal dog. Perhaps the film could have been shortened to preserve its emotional impact by using a montage approach or some other creative means to tighten up the ending. It is curious to see that the film omits some seemingly important facts, like (a) a sympathetic station manager gave Hachi free run of Shibuya Station and set aside a storage room as a place for the dog to sleep and (b) the original Hachiko statue was created during Hachi's life. Indeed, Hachi was present at its unveiling. Nonetheless, I recommend "Hachi-Ko" as a charming film for the entire family to watch. |
