Professional Review of "Hamasaki Ayumi - Rock'n'Roll Circus (CD+DVD) (Korea Version)"

May 12, 2010

This professional review refers to Rock'n'Roll Circus (Jacket A)(ALBUM+DVD)(Japan Version)
Hamasaki Ayumi is no stranger to the rock genre. Over her illustrious 12 year career, she has recorded numerous rock-influenced singles and albums. However, her last several releases have been criticized for going away from her roots and as a result causing a dip in her popularity and album sales. The Queen of J-pop turns to rebellious rock & roll to respond loudly to her critics with her eleventh album, Rock'n'Roll Circus.

Recorded at London's famed Metropolis studios which notable rockers such as Bon Jovi and Queen have used before, the album kicks off with an introduction called THE introduction. It sets a dark, yet empowering mood with its orchestral, electronic bass line and leads the way to the explosive Microphone. Certainly the hardest-sounding track of the record, it begins with frantic organ playing before coming in with a full band sound. Although powerful, it is also confusing as it continuously alternates between loud and soft throughout the whole track.

If the multi-talented songstress really wants to find success with rock music, she should continue what she does in count down (Track 3) and Last Link (Track 6). Both tracks begin softly and slowly build up to the louder choruses, dizzying guitars, slamming drums. Although they don't pack a punch as hard as Microphone, these two tracks are edgy enough without overdoing the intense rock sound.

In between the two rock tracks are two soft ballads, Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ followed by BALLAD. Hamasaki definitely knows how to do ballads and the unimaginatively-named BALLAD is among her best. The use of the Chinese instruments gives it a grand and epic sound which goes well with her dramatic singing on the track. Sunset is the slowed version of Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ (Track 12). It's a basic ballad with some piano and strings arrangement while Sunrise has more electronic elements to pick up the pace of the song. Which is better depends on whether you prefer the slow love song or the get-up, get-moving type of song, but neither really stand out.

In the middle of the album, there are two completely different sounding interludes with the exotic Don’t look back (Track 8) sandwiched in between. While Don't look back provides an element of uniqueness to the album with its Arabian-influenced electronic sound, I'm not sure about the decision to place the two interludes so close to one another. Maybe she wants to signify a departure from the "rock tent" of her circus with the gothic Montage, and announce the entrance to the "dance tent" with the blood-pumping Jump!, but I found both tracks unnecessary.

The next two techno tracks that come after the second interlude are hit or miss; they're not great but they're not dreadful either. While Lady Dynamite is catchy, it's also messy and unclear on whether it wants to be a rock song or a techno one. Sexy Little things is a real fun song but can be annoying at times with the quirky sounds that are heard throughout the track.

The album ends with three pop-rock ballad hybrids. On a quick listen, you might not know where one ends and the other begins as all three have the same soft opening and the gradual buildup. Only Red Line ~for TA~ (Track 15) stands out as Hamasaki ends the track and album by singing the chorus a cappella, showing the deep meaning of the song.

All in all, Rock'n'Roll Circus is an above average release from the Japanese diva. However, if you're expecting a genuine rock album, then you'll be disappointed. The number of actual rock tracks can be counted on one hand as the tracks take a 5-track dance detour before making its way back towards pop/rock sounds. Although the personal subjects and raw emotions she places in her lyrics are deep and dark, they aren't supplemented with the right music to make them into true rock songs.

Better than GUILTY and NEXT LEVEL Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The title is "Rock'n'Roll Circus" but, saying the truth, this title was more suitable for "GUILTY", here there is only "Microphone" as rock song and a lot of pop and ballads. By the way, "Sunrise" was a good summer single, different from the others, not techno-dance just pop but with a very catchy melody, "Sunset" is the ballad version of "Sunrise". "You were..." sounds a lot like "Days" but it's a strong and powerful ballad, "BALLAD" is a nice ballad (as the title says) with oriental ethnic sounds. "Microphone" surprised me a lot, it's a gothic-rock track but the only one representing rock in the album, "Don't look back" is a super catchy pop song, "Sexy little things" is a new style from Ayu, cute but not dance, it's very enjoyable anyway. The album ends with an acoustic pop song titled "RED LINE", it's the best chioce to close this wonderful album. I enjoyed the experimental sound of "NEXT LEVEL" but this sounds more mature to me.

From a British Point of View Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Being both British and a MASSIVE long time Ayu fan I wet myself with excitement went I learnt that the concept for Ayu’s new album was Britian!!!
But how does her new release compare to her other work?

Songs
Containing a mixture of rock, pop and ballads Ayu manages to give us the type of songs that we know and love her for as well as moving her music into a fresh direction. For me there are a few stand out songs that really show that Ayu still has that music magic. Sexy Little Things is a bizarre pop track with a dark under current, Don’t Look Back is a mysterious haunting track with a beautiful sitar playing throughout, Lady Dynamite is a top foot stamping party anthem and Microphone is Ayu Rock at its best!!!!

Music Videos
I LOVE the videos for Microphone and Sexy Little Things!!! Okay, okay I know they were shot in Britain so I am a little biased but they are both REALLY BIZZARE and REALLY BRITISH at the same time. For any Brits out there seeing a bunch of fox hunters doing a daft dance, a janitor body popping in the underground tunnels, and a scary clown man in a white bowler hat is a must!!!! Also the MV for Lady Dynamite is … well … if you have seen the video for Relax by 80s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood you will get a idea … yep that’s right … Ayu in a gay bar …. who’d have thought it!!!!

Photos
As well as the CD booklet you also get a bonus photobook of Ayu out and about in London. I love her in our British telephone booths, looking glamorous by Big Ben, marching in front of the palace and even hanging around outside a pub!!!! The only problem is that in most the photos the weather was being typically British …. Rainy and grey skies!!!!

Although I wouldn’t say this is my favourite Ayu album it is definitely in my top five and for any British Ayu fans this album is pure gold as its great to see our idol on our green and pleasant lands!!!

Hm... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Still not as good as the Guilty album, but...

Well, I will admit that I've loved all of the tracks on Hamasaki's past few singles "Sunset / Sunrise~LOVE is ALL~" & "You were... / BALLAD" and I'm so happy they're on this album, however the newer songs didn't really catch my interest as much.

To be perfectly honest, the only other track outside of the tracks that were on previously released singles that I like is "Don't look back" and "last montage". The PV for "Don't Look Back" is gorgeous... but once again arises the competition between Ayumi and Amuro (Namie Amuro's concept for her recent album is ripping up her past hits PAST < FUTURE). HOWEVER, I like both artists so this is a nice competition for the two.

The concepts for the other PV's seems like she was trying to hard... I wish everyone would leave the Lady Gaga trend to HER and stop trying to be OVER creative without knowing what you're doing. To be honest, the "Sexy Little Things" PV especially scared the crap out of me and kind of made me upset...

On a good note, I really LOVE the album art. She looks so CUTE with her new hair. So, if I were to buy this album, It would be because I didn't buy the past singles and I want the PV for "Don't look back."

She does it again! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Ayu never ceases to amaze me. Album after album for years, she is #1. Why? Because she's incredible. I really really loved the last album, NEXT LEVEL, and the one before that, GUILTY, so I was unsure if I could possibly get another one in a row that I love so much, and I did. I adore this album. It flows beautifully and has just enough ballad to it for my taste with plenty of upbeat and rock/pop. I love it. Added to the fact that I know Ayumi puts her heart and soul into this music, makes me really appreciate all her hard work and the fact I have this album to enjoy because of it. Any fan or pseudo-fan needs to buy this album now. It's great!
