YesAsia Editorial Description

Over the last two decades, Kitano Takeshi has emerged as one of the most representative figures of Japanese cinema, be it as an actor or as a director. His distinct style and aesthetic, characterized by unflinching violence, bizarre surrealism, and deadpan black humor, has brought him awards and acclaim the world over, and Hana-Bi, a.k.a. Fireworks, is one of his most well-known works. Kitano's signature synthesis of violent yakuza bloodshed and poetic silence reaches a beautiful zenith in this thrilling, yet meditative masterpiece. The film also features brilliant supporting performances from acclaimed actor Osugi Ren and Kitano regulars Kishimoto Kayoko and Terajima Susumu and a sublime film score from renowned composer Hisaishi Joe. Hana-Bi picked up a myriad of awards including the prestigious Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Film Festival and a clean sweep at the Blue Ribbon Awards (Best Film, Director, Actor, and Supporting Actor).

Decked in dark suit and shades, cop Nishi (Kitano Takeshi) may look as cool, collected, and curiously unemotive as ever, but his life is slowly spinning out of control. His wife (Kishimoto Kayoko) is dying of leukemia and his partner Horibe (Osugi Ren) becomes paralyzed and suicidal after getting shot on the job. While Horibe takes up painting to ease his mind (the artwork featured is painted by Kitano himself), Nishi leaves the police force. In order to pay for the mounting hospital bills, he becomes involved with the yakuza and gets pulled into a destructive spiral of crime and bloodshed.

best movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
l havent seen Zatoichi yet but l'm expecting it to be another masterpiece of Takeshi Kitano. This movie is called Hana-bi. Hana means flower and bi means fire and the 2 put together is firework. TK carefully saparate the two words but at the same time link them by a hyphen. That is the main theme of the movie! The movie explores the meaning of life and how to live a life... At the begining, all bad things happened to Nishi, his family and his friends and he has no reason to live on. However, he decided to let all others around him to live on meaningfully by sacrificing himself... to him, one should live a beautiful and meaningful life however short it is... as beautiful as flower and as short as fire, and on a whole as splendid as firework however short it is... so he took his wife to the north so that she would memorize those happy moments they once had (his wife has not yet recovered from the pain for the loss of their daughter and shortly after she learned that she had cancer... no reason to stay alive). He has 3 partners in work. One has broken his legs and was dumped by his wife and daughter. He has no reason to life on and committed suicide. However, he was saved and Nishi tried every effort to encourage him to live a beautiful life. Nishi also gave money to the wife of his other partner(they were just married) to support her living. The remaining partner remained working for the police coz he was not injured. He carry on his daily duty but it seems that life is not meaningful nor beautiful to this partner, so at the end he said something like "l hope l could lead a life like him (Nishi)" with admiration in his eyes. l bought this dvd set. This dvd set is especially good cos it contains a small booklet with pix, information and the dialogue of the scenes in the movie. a most buy for TK's collection.

The Best Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
In my opinion this is easily one of the best movies you will ever see.
No pointless gun battles, but a strongly emotional storyline that will bring tears to your eyes at the end of the movie.
This story will stay in your mind for days and days.

Worst film ever Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
After hearing that this film won quite afew awards and it is considered one of the best film of all time, I was really expecting this film to be really good. But I was so disappointed, Because in my opinion this is by far the worst film I have ever seen(crap storyline, limited action and all the actors(except for Beat Takeshi) and actress are unknown).

Good but not the best Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Hana-bi also known as Fireworks is one of Kitano's most famous movies. This movie is similar to many of his others such as Violent Cop. This movie is not really an action-movie. Rather, it is a slow moving movie that is filled with mostly talking and serene scenes with some bursts of violence here and there. I fouind this movie to be a bit boring actually though the ending is shocking.
