After successful cinematic adaptations of Semi Shigure and Yamazakura, Yamazakura writers Hasegawa Yasuo and Iida Kenzaburo bring another Fujisawa Shohei "Unisaka Han Daizen" story to the silver screen with Hana no Ato. Fujisawa, who also wrote the original novels of Yamada Yoji's "Samurai Trilogy", created the fictional Unisaka area for a series of stories about the lives of the people there. Directed by Nakanishi Kenji (The Blue Bird), the focus is shifted this time from the world of honorable samurais to a doomed love affair starring rising star actress Kitagawa Keiko (in her first period role) and television personality/ballet dancer Miyao Shuntaro as the star-crossed lovers.

Ito (Kitagawa Keiko) is the daughter of a respected clan official in Unisaka. One say, she encounters low-ranked samurai Magoshiro (Miyao Shuntaro) and challenges him to a sparring match. From there, the two develop a quiet relationship. However, the two struggle to defy the obstacles that prevent them from being together, from their social statuses to their respective arranged marriages.
