Acclaimed director Sato Makoto committed suicide on September 4, 2007, leaving behind a legacy of socially conscious documentary filmmaking. His most well-known works include Living on the River Agano (1992), Self and Others (2000), and his final film Out of Place: Memories of Edward Said (2005). Released in 2001, the sensitive documentary Hanako looks into the daily lives of a severely mentally challenged girl and her father and sister.
