On January 17, 1995, a devastating earthquake struck the city of Kobe, Japan, killing over 6,400 people. To commemorate this tragic disaster and pay tribute to all those who lived it, Fuji Television produced a two-hour docudrama special about that fateful day through the eyes of professional journalists. Based on a book by the staff members of a Kobe newspaper and starring Arashi member Sakurai Sho as a photographer, Kobe Shinbun no Nanokakan depicts the plight of journalists trying to get news about the disaster to the rest of the world with only one operational phone line and no computer. Shown on television one night before the earthquake's 15th anniversary, the powerful docudrama was a ratings hit in Japan, attracting more viewers than any other drama program that night.

阪神・淡路大震災から１５年・・・。神戸新聞の新聞記者たちが、本社倒壊という危機に直面しながらも、瓦礫の中で新聞を作り続けた闘いの模様を描く。１９９５年１月１７日、阪神・淡路大震災発生。被災地は、ライフラインとともにすべての情報から遮断された。神戸新聞は創業１１０年、戦時中でも休刊しなかった、神戸の人には欠かせない地方紙だったが、今回の震災の被害により新聞社としての機能は完全に奪われ、残されたのは自らも被災した記者たちだけだった。そんな中、彼らは「何としても新聞は出す！」という決意を固める。しかし、果たして新聞社として機能を奪われた彼らに新聞を出すことは出来るのか・・・。未曾有の災害の中で、記者たちは悲しみ、悩み、戸惑い、新聞のもつ「伝える」ということの本当の意味を考え始める・・・。主役の写真部記者・三津山を演じるのは、自らもニュースキャスターをつとめる、嵐の櫻井翔。新人の写真部記者に吹石一恵、写真部の先輩記者に萩原聖人、そして、自らが血だらけになりながらも走り続けた整理部長に高嶋政宏、神戸新聞の皆に喝を入れ、新聞を出すという決意を貫く編集局長に内藤剛志と豪華俳優陣が脇を固めます。神戸新聞のある方はこうおっしゃいました。「つらいことを思い出させることはあるかもしれない。でも震災の記憶は決して風化させてはならない」と。
