Happily Ever After (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Popular director Tsutsumi Yukihiko (Memories of Tomorrow) made two films with his frequent star Abe Hiroshi in 2007. The first was the campy period sci-fi fantasy The Sword of Alexander, and the second was the romantic comedy Happily Ever After (a.k.a. Jigyaku no Uta). A guaranteed winner thanks to the star pairing of Abe and Nakatani Miki, Happily Ever After is certainly no ordinary romantic comedy, portraying an abusive marital relationship with over-the-top jaunt. Adapted from Gouda Yoshi's popular comic strip series, the film lends readily to comparison with Memories of Matsuko as Nakatani Miki portrays an unlucky, but stalwartly cheerful plain Jane who is stubbornly in love with a terrible guy. Happily Ever After, however, takes a lighter tone, presenting its tragicomedy elements with family sitcom bemusement. There are deliberate variations in direction and cinematography as the story progresses, at times creating stark differently environments and moods with each scene, and contributing to the topsy-turvy atmosphere of the film.

Curiously freckled and cheery waitress Yukie (Nakatani Miki) is married to bad-tempered ex-yakuza Isao (Abe Hiroshi). She loves him madly, and he's just mad. Yukie endures all to be with her alcoholic gambling deadbeat of a husband who has a habit of flipping tables whenever he's upset, which is often. Just how did she end up in this relationship? It all started back in her school years when her father's failed bank robbery forces her to leave her hometown in disgrace, and head for Osaka. There she meets a man as hopeless as she is.

Japan's most tear-jerking "cartoon strip" has finally been made into a film!
Yukie Morita is fully devoted to her common-law husband, Isao Hayama who hangs around all day doing nothing but gambing. Everyone around her feels sorry for her, but there definitely exists "Love".

Unconventional tale of an unconventional love Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Happily Ever After", Nakatani Miki stars as Yukie, a homely girl spurned by her classmates in high school, who leaves town after suffering the humiliation of having her father arrested for armed robbery. In the big city, Yukie earns a hard living as a streetwalker, abused by her johns. The glowering Isao (Abe Hiroshi), however, is smitten by Yukie and saves her from the downward spiral that threatens her life. Once rescued by Isao, Yukie blossoms into an indefatigably hard-working waitress. Unfortunately, the self-loathing Isao's love for Yukie soon turns abusive; he wastes his days (and Yukie's earnings) in pachinko parlors and repeatedly flies into a rage over the smallest quibbles. Meanwhile, Yukie's employer has fallen for his dedicated waitress and hopes to persuade Yukie to leave Isao and marry him. Events come to a boil when Yukie learns that she has become pregnant. Can her relationship with Isao be saved? Will Isao finally learn to be a man?

Boasting a terrific supporting cast and featuring enough comedic elements to keep its story from becoming turgid, "Happily Ever After" provides yet another showcase for the amazing talents of Nakatani Miki. As she did in "Memories of Matsuko", Miss Nakatani submerges herself in her quirky character and makes us hope against hope that things will turn out well for her in the end. Director Tsutsumi Yukihiko has delivered a sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartwrenching, and always engaging film, a tale of the overcoming power of unconditional love.
