YesAsia Editorial Description
After starring together in the 2008 TVB idol drama Dressage To Win, pop idol Ken Hung (Love is Elsewhere) and newcomer Michelle Wai (Trick or Cheat) transport their romance to the big screen for the pure love feature Happily Ever After. Directed by Y.Y. Kong and Azrael Chung, the idol romance lives up to its genre with young photogenic stars, cute love stories, and tearjerking pathos, while adding a curious twist to the melodrama. Happily Ever After also co-stars Carlos Chan Ka Lok (Connected) from Dressage To Win, and popular character actor Hui Siu Hung as Michelle Wai's father.
College student Nam (Michelle Wai) juggles school and a part-time gig as a photographer's assistant for her longtime friend Chun Man (Carlos Chan), who holds an obvious torch for her. With high school reunion coming up, Nam recalls her abbreviated puppy love with classmate To Chi (Ken Hung), her almost boyfriend who left suddenly for Canada. Their bickering relationship ended over a misunderstanding back in high school, but the two reconnect immediately when they meet again. Nam is as happy as could be with To Chi. But one day Chun Man tells her that To Chi is actually comatose in Canada, and that no one else can see To Chi.

Story of a girl’s idée fixe
Story of a girl’s idée fixe
|
“Happy Ever After” is about Nam (Michelle Wai), a college student who falls in love after a brief relationship with her school friend To Chi (Ken Hung) only to be separated from him after Nam discovers at a school reunion that To Chi is quickly moving to Canada (cue - big teary argument at said reunion), becomes a combination of puppy love, emotional obsession, grief and the supernatural. But “HEA” certainly is a ‘pretty’ movie with an aesthetic pop idol cast and alluring atmosphere of yearning and young love, and certainly very good. The supernatural ‘ghost’ elements and tragic romance take subtle back seats though to a more emphasised theme of Nam’s personality and of her tortured soul needing to be with To Chi after he leaves her. The feelings are mutual as To Chi loves Nam, but Nam’s obsession with To Chi borders on the crazy and her perception of love cloistered within herself of how she 'sees' Chi as her ideal. Another school friend quite and shy Chun Man (Carlos Chan) also loves Nam, quietly asking her for dates, but Nam rejects him as her self confirmed idee fixe for To Chi seems ordained. Both To Chi and Nam love photography, are born on the same birth date of May and seem ideally combined as a perfect couple by their shared ideals. But the crucial, certainly the mistake here is to regard this film as a mere love tragedy only, is when Nam turns her love for To Chi into obsession. I found it mildly amusing that Nam’s worried dad, excellently played here by Hui Siu Hung (also in “Loads of Films”), works in his own shop selling various types of light bulbs (metaphorically a ‘light’ that indicates something Nam needed to ‘turn on’ in her futile dark love for To Chi). But Nam’s loss of her mother is also a strong point here. It mentioned in the making of (also English subtitled) that Ken had advised Michelle Wai and Carlos Chan to not slur their words (apparently), and surely Ken was a fine mentor to both young actors there. But even so, both perform excellently with Michelle having such an emotional scene in a convenience store as to make Carlos cry watching the take afterwards. Chun Man is also well played by Carlos by his quiet man role and Keanu Reeves looks. I won’t say much about plot but this is worth seeing for fans of romance and tears, the film “Ghost” and very cute looking people. |
