I never get tired of this one

It was a screamingly hot summer day in 1997. To escape the sun's torture, I crawled into the Shibuya Tower Records shop. There, like some weird heat-induced hallucination, I saw the posters promoting this new album from something called Pizzicato Five. I'd never heard of them. The posters showed a geeky looking guy with his noggin enveloped in a gauzy bag standing next to a woman wearing a hat so big it looked like a lampshade. The title of the album? "Happy End of the World." Given the brutal weather, it somehow all made sense to me. I slapped down my gajillion yen for this musical mystery. After oozing my way back to my overpriced hotel room, I collapsed in front of the air conditioner and listened to the album. Soon a big silly smile had covered my face. Twelve years later, after listening to this album countless times, each time I play it again I get that same big silly smile. I love this album! Filled with goofy retro melodies, fake advertisements, fake cheerleaders, and some of the whompingest beats you'd ever want to hear, "Happy End of the World" is sheer pixilated delight. Resembling a 1960s vision of 'futuristic' music, channeling equal parts of Burt Bacharach and "The Jetsons", these songs become simply unforgettable. I guarantee this: It's impossible to remain in a bad mood while listening to this CD. Buy it and enjoy a very happy end of the world! |
