Still only "OK"...
Still only "OK"...

Well, I was wrong thinking that this singer would show immense growth from her previous mini-album "Nostalgia". Instead, this CD is actually less of a favorite for me than that one. I still think the VOICE is excellent (reminds me a little bit of Kokia with the high soprano), but the music is all over the place. For me...I really loved tracks #2, #4, #6, #9 and #10. They are all solid catchy general pop or elegantly done beautiful ballads. But I get confused with the tracks #1, #5, #7, #8 and #11. These songs sound a lot like retro- swing type songs from the American 1930s era musically. Lots of horns (brass) and odd-beats. I felt like during those songs I was in a casino somewhere or stranded on a cruise ship. Not good at all. I honestly believe this singer has an amazing voice...and it shows on her ballads and pop numbers. But whoever is giving her the advice (or her own decision) to sing those other songs needs to re-think. They are not typical J-Pop and really make this release a bit of a mis-match musically. I almost wonder if this effect was intentional, because mostly it's the odd numbered tracks that have the awful music and the even numbered tracks that are basic, contemporary J-Pop. If it was intentional...I will probably let my two not-so-great experiences with this artist prohibit me from buying more from her. Yes, I like her voice, but it's not unique and I can find singers who sound like her with better music behind them. If this singer did NOT realize what a disjointed CD this was going to be and her next CD is all one style...then perhaps I will try her music ONE MORE TIME. Really, though...this is no CD to rush out to purchase. It's just not a great release. Not BAD, but not great either. Which is a shame, because vocally she has talent. |
