In 2010, the story of a little space probe called the Hayabusa and its miraculous return to earth captivated both science enthusiasts and the Japanese public alike. In fact, the story is so amazing that the space probe's seven-year journey in space will be the subject of three feature films - all released in the course of a year! Made with the full cooperation of Japanese space agency JAXA to ensure accuracy, Hayabusa from director Tsutsumi Yukihiko (Trick, 20th Century Boys) is the first of the three films. Tsutsumi's take on the tale is told from the perspectives of Megumi (Takeuchi Yuko), a public relations staff at the space agency, as well as the project team, namely a senior researcher played by Nishida Toshiyuki (The Magic Hour) in an award-winning performance.

In 2003, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the Hayabusa space probe, the first spacecraft designed to collect and bring back data on an asteroid. With a space program whose size is only a fraction of programs in Russia and the United States, JAXA could only afford a small budget for the Hayabusa project, causing people like researcher Matoba Yasuhiro (Nishida Toshiyuki) to clash with bureaucrats. Watching on the sidelines is Megumi (Takeuchi Yuko), a shy woman whose work at JAXA's public relations department include explaining the intricacies of the Hayabusa project. A space enthusiast herself, Megumi follows the probe's journey with close attention, hoping that Hayabusa would return home safely.
