New Wave director Sono Sion (Suicide Club) takes his lens to the crime-ridden streets of New York in the raw and gritty Hazard, starring Odagiri Joe (Yureru). Sono's vision of New York, in all its romanticized capers and ugly stereotypes, is more imagined than realistic, but provides a telling outsider's view of an insider's view of urban America. The film is shot mostly on hand-held, with few cuts and many long takes, giving the biting, fast-paced account almost a documentary feel. Amidst the fast times and scrappy action, Hazard tells a compelling story of dreams and disillusions lost in the dizzying rough and tumble of life. Though not released until 2006, the film was actually shot in 2002, providing a glimpse of a younger Odagiri before he hit stardom.

Thirsty for escape from his routine life, bored college student Shin (Odagiri Joe) travels from Japan to Hazard, New York's storied crime-ridden combat zone. He is quickly initiated into the local culture when he gets mugged by gangsters. Left with no money, Shin attempts to shoplift from a local deli, only to get pulled into a robbery spree with two Japanese-American street-smart small-timers. Eager for adventure, Shin tags on with short, talkative Lee (Jai West) and tall, simple-minded Takeda (Fukami Motoki) on their many crime capers - stealing cars, holding up stores, selling laced ice cream. At first, everything seems to be fun and games, but the good times soon run dry.
