Tora fumbles again
|
"Hearts and Flowers for Tora-San", the 29th film in director Yamada Yoji's great series, recycles some elements from "Tora-San Meets His Lordship" (in which Tora befriends a wealthy old daimyo) and "Tora-San's Sunrise and Sunset" (in which Tora befriends a hugely famous old artist). In "Hearts and Flowers", Tora befriends a renowned old ceramic artist, but never grasps that this man's vases, cups, etc. are deemed national treasures. Instead, Tora assumes that the man became wealthy through some nefarious dealings and now in his dotage is indulging a whim to make pottery. The misunderstanding is mined for plenty of rich humor, culminating in the Octopus using one of the great man's rice bowls as an ash tray. The film revolves around the story of Kagari (Ishida Ayumi), the ceramicist's pretty maid. Kagari is bemused at Tora's "bull in a pottery shop" presence in the ceramicist's home and touched by his simple gift of a new pair of clogs. She has been working in the home for five years, patiently awaiting the return of one of the artist's disciples, who had promised to marry her. When the disciple returns, Kagari is crushed to learn that he now plans to marry a wealthy woman who can help his career. She returns to her home in the small seaside town of Tango and the artist urges Tora to visit her to find out how she is doing. Given Kagari's haunting beauty, this doesn't take much urging. In Tango, Kagari lives with her mother and daughter. Tora learns that Kagari is a widow and had been orphaned and adopted by a hard-drinking fisherman. Kagari herself has acquired the habit of drowning her sorrows in sake. However, here at her home she seems relaxed and happy, her smile lighting up the screen. Tora flees back to Tokyo, afraid of his growing feelings for her, but then is bedridden with lovesickness until Kagari and a friend arrive at Toraya during a sightseeing trip. Kagari slips Tora a note, secretly asking him to meet her in a park in Kamakura. Tora, still afraid of his feelings, takes his sister's son Mitsuo (Yoshioka Hidetaka) along with him as a foil. The trip to Kamakura proves to be a disaster, as Tora is too tongue-tied to speak. Kagari is disappointed to learn that the lively Tora she encountered while he was on the road is much different from the Tora haunted by past failings and disappointments she has found in Tokyo. "Hearts and Flowers for Tora-San" is an interesting entry in this series for many reasons: Its opening dream sequence is touching and magical, rather than a device to poke fun at Tora. Its opening title sequence does not feature the typical slapstick, but instead shows Tora's good nature and near-illiteracy in his first meeting with the ceramicist. It is the first film in which the Mitsuo character is given a meaningful role. It features spectacular cinematography of Tango. And it gives us the divine Ishida Ayumi, who cornered the market for "long-suffering beauty" roles. If you like her in this film, I encourage you to check her out in Fukasaku Kinji's "House on Fire", Gosha Hideo's "Hunter in the Dark", and Yamada Yoji's "The Learning Circle", all available from YesAsia. "Hearts and Flowers for Tora-San" is highly recommended. |
