A fresh lineup of up-and-coming stars raises the temperature in the 2007 youth action comedy caper Heat Island, the debut feature film of television director Katayama Osamu (Hana Yori Dango 2). Based on a Kakine Ryosuke novel, Heat Island stars D-BOYS idol Shirota You (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e), rising actress Kitagawa Keiko (Mop Girl, Fast and Furious 2: Tokyo Drift), singer Van Tomiko, Kimura Ryo (Nodame Cantabile, Catch a Wave), and pop group AAA's Ito Chiaki (Honey and Clover) and Urata Naoya as wayward youth who wile their trouble-making days away in Shibuya. One day, the friends joyfully happen upon a bag full of money, but the windfall wealth turns them into the target of the yakuza.

Heat Island may not have been the Guy Ritchie type movie experience I expected, but the story was good and easy to follow even with my limited knowledge of the Japanese language. It was odd for me at first to see Shirota Yu, and most definitely AAA's goofy leader Urata Naoya in these darker roles. However, the entire cast was amazing and able to draw me right in. So let's see, dark themes, questionable characters, and some good old violence. If you like gangster movies, Heat Island may not be the best, but you won't be disappointed, and the special features definitely add some play time to the DVD. I highly recommend it. ^^ |
