YesAsia Editorial Description
Heaven Can Help, or maybe Eric Tsang can, in this 1984 horror comedy directed by Shaw Brothers star David Chiang. Heaven Can Help marked Chiang's first, though certainly not last, time helming a comedy after directorial efforts like The One Armed Swordsman and The Legend of the Owl. Co-starring Hong Kong beauty Cherie Chung (An Autumn's Tale) as well as Richard Ng, Paul Chun, and Charlie Chin, the film follows a spirit caught between life and death on a dangerous and hilarious mission to save himself.
Don Mak (Eric Tsang) is a veritable bad luck magnet who makes a habit out of getting mugged and getting fired. Fortunately, Don Mak is an extremely optimistic person who believes that things will get better, though they seem to only get worse. After getting dumped by his fiancee, Don drinks and drives, and ends up in a serious car accident. While his body is comatose, Don's spirit wanders to Purgatory, but is ordered to leave by underworld guardians because his time has not come yet. They also reveal to Don that his death will come after the murders of three particular people. Don returns to the mortal world, determined to stop the murders and thus his own death.

Fully deserving of its obscurity

"Heaven Can Help" is all a bit overcooked. Through most of the first hour, we follow Don Mak (Eric Tsang) frantically running about, seeking to save his own life by saving the lives of others. Don Mak, after getting fired from his job and dumped by his girlfriend, went on a drinking binge that ends with his wrecked car careening down a hill. Unconscious after the accident, his spirit journeys to the gates of hell, where two guardians turn him back. Don Mak learns that he is fated to die after three other people have died. Consequently, he dedicates himself to trying to keep those people alive. The comic returns on this set-up are rather meager. In the film's last half-hour, attention shifts to Cherie Chung's character (who had played only a very minor part in the film's first hour). Poor Cherie is being chased by the killer who had bumped off her brother. While there certainly are pleasures to be found in watching Cherie run around in short shorts, it all adds up to pretty thin gruel. Heaven apparently didn't provide much help to "Heaven Can Help". The movie serves up lots of sound and fury signifying a few modest laughs, a little Cherie Chung cheesecake, and not much else. |
