YesAsia Editorial Description

Adapted from the Heaven's Bookstore series of novels, which sold over 500,000 copies in Japan, Tengoku no Honya - Koibi (Heaven's Bookstore - The Light of Love) combines the first and third book of the series into one film which is set in heaven and earth. Starring the popular Takeuchi Yuko of Yomigaeri Resurrection and Pride fame, she will take on the challenge of play two characters in the film!

Confectionary salesperson Kanako (Takeuchi Yuko) is busy trying to organise the "Love Fireworks" for the shopping street's Firework festival, which traditionally opens and closes the festival. Legend has it that the "Love Fireworks" can bless lovers with lifelong happiness, and Takimoto is the only firework master that can operate it. However, since an accident, Takimoto has given up on fireworks. Kanako found Takimoto in hopes to persuade him to operate it again. At the same time, pianist Kenta (Tamayama Tetsuji) finds himself in heaven even though he is still alive, and is working at the Heaven's Bookshop. One day at work, he sees his idol pianist Shoko (Tamayami Tetsuyi). However, something that happened made Shoko unable to play the piano. The two stories unfold in two different worlds somehow connects, and will the "Love Fireworks" come to life in time?

Professional Review of "Heaven's Bookstore (Hong Kong Version)"

March 28, 2007

This professional review refers to Tengoku no Honya - Koibi (Heaven's Bookstore - The Light of Love) (Japan Version - English Subtitles)
Does love go beyond the span of a human life? Can true love exist even in heaven? Where do we go after we die? These are some of the questions Heaven's Bookstore, an adaptation of not just one, but two best-selling Japanese novels, tries to answer. Heaven's Bookstore combines a fantasy involving life in heaven and a simple drama about characters searching for redemption for lost love on Earth. As heavy as the subject matters seem, the film manages to be touching and lighthearted enough that thankfully makes everything go down easier, despite being somewhat too simplistic.

Heaven's Bookstore opens with Kenta (Tetsuji Tamayama), a failing classical pianist, being brought to heaven by Yamaki (Yoshio Harada) to work in a bookstore where books are read to customers out loud. Apparently, each person has a 100-year lifespan, and if a person dies before he/she reaches 100 years old, the rest of his/her years are spent in heaven waiting for reincarnation. However, Kenta isn't dead, he's just there as a part-time worker for some unknown reason (which is only slightly hinted at towards the end). One day, Shoko (Yuko Takeuchi) goes to the bookstore and Kenta immediately recognizes her as the pianist who inspired him to play the piano as a child and begins to befriend her. Inspired by his passion, Shoko begins to teach him how to master the craft of piano playing (although Shoko, deaf in one ear, cannot play the piano herself). In return, Kenta helps her write the unfinished piano piece she never finished after her death.

Meanwhile, Shoko's niece Kanako (in a Love Letter-style twist, she's also played by Yuko Takeuchi) tries to revive the town fireworks show for the first time in over 12 years. The star of the show would be the Wabi, a type of Japanese firework also known as the "Loving Fireworks" that made the shows legendary in their day. But she has to first convince the talented fireworks craftsman Takimoto (Teruyuki Kagawa), the only man in the region who can make Wabi, to come out of retirement. But to do that, he must first conquer the guilt he feels for his involvement in the accident that left Shoko deaf in one ear 13 years previously.

Director Tetsuo Shinohara combines the two simple stories by not concentrating on any intricate plotting or the logistics of heaven (apparently, Japanese is the official language of heaven and it looks conspicuously like Hokkaido in springtime). Instead, he focuses his time on his characters and their individual dilemmas. Heaven's Bookstore doesn't strive to resolve all the questions one would have about life and death, but rather to present a cast of characters that tries to leave their past behind. While not all the characters are equally compelling, Shinohara does make sure the audience cares about them enough that the touching moments of the film work. However, the pleasantness of the proceedings means the film never manages to elevate itself beyond light entertainment to a work that would stir philosophical discussions.

Sporting a handful of supporting characters, the performances are surprisingly mixed. Despite Kenta's journey to learn the true art of piano playing, Tetsuji Tamayama fails to step up as the leading man by looking lost instead of inspired, and Teruyuki Kagawa overplays his tormented Takimoto in the emotional scenes, making him seem more crazed than regretful. On the other hand, Yuko Takeuchi convincingly plays the two central characters with class, creating two distinct personalities and goals – one trying to move on from the past, and the other trying to revive it. Takeuchi's ability to convey the various emotions of the two characters makes this a true star performance. While Heaven's Bookstore features some beautiful people, nice scenery, and emotional moments that might even induce a tear or two, it's definitely not a romance at heart. A few of the major characters do long for romantic love, but love in Heaven's Bookstore is really about love for family, for life, for nostalgia, and even for piano playing. That is perhaps the best thing about Heaven's Bookstore; Shinohara didn't need to give the film unrealistic romantic moments (especially where any romance between Shoko and the elderly Kenta would seem creepy, rather than touching.) and keeps the characters true to their nature. While the film's failure to turn the heaven idea into something beyond a simple gimmick will probably draw some criticism, those looking for a sweet and simple film for a weekend afternoon will find the simplicity of the plot works just fine.

Engaging tale of forgiveness Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Kenta (the very handsome Tamayama Tetsuji), a pianist fired from his job in a chamber music quintet, drowns his sorrows in alcohol, then finds himself in heaven, where he soon meets Shoko (Takeuchi Yuko), the woman who inspired him to become a pianist. We learn that, during her life, Shoko lost hearing in one ear from an explosion at her lover's fireworks shop, then died as a consequence of that injury. Now she seems to find comfort in teaching Kenta how to develop a greater sensitivity in his playing through listening more carefully.

Back in the real world, Kanako (also played by Takeuchi Yuko), Shoko's niece, is organizing a fireworks festival for the shopping district in which her family's sweet shop is located. Kanako hopes that the fireworks can culminate in a display of "love fireworks", but learns that Takimoto, the fireworks craftsman who makes them has retired. Kanako learns that Takimoto was his aunt's lover and is consumed by guilt over the explosion that ultimately took Shoko's life. Kanako persists in seeking to have Takimoto make the famous "love fireworks", but Takimoto refuses, desiring nothing more than to be left alone in his hermit-like insularity.

Lastly, we meet a young woman who has been snatched into heaven before she could commit suicide over grief and guilt she feels from the death of her younger brother, for which she feels responsible.

Out of these disparate threads, director Shinohara Tetsuo has fashioned a delicate fugue of a film about grief, guilt, and forgiveness -- for it is only through forgiveness that these characters are able to get on with their lives (in heaven or on earth). Takeuchi Yuko deserves special mention for delivering two fully-realized, but entirely different characters in Shoko and Kanako. One might criticize "Heaven's Bookstore" for its gossamer lightness, but it is a sweet, carefully crafted film about subjects that rarely are handled quite so delicately as they are here.

Saw this film at a film festival. Thought it was pretty good except that since I didn't know it was dealing with events in heaven and on earth, it took me a while to figure out what was going on. Would love to get this DVD if it was all region with english subtitles.
