Mike Mignola's popular comic book series Hellboy comes alive brilliantly on screen through the skillful hands of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth). A tight, eccentric ball of pulp action and comic adventure with horror and humor to boot, the film is clearly a labor of love for del Toro who presents the film with an intensity and intelligence that does justice to the original work. Packed with astounding visual effects and thrilling action scenes, the film underlies its crowd-pleasing genre tropes with a surprisingly human story about a demon. Even by comic book standards, Hellboy makes for an unlikely hero, and Ron Perlman, under lots of makeup and prosthetics, brings to the misfit role a strong, gruff, yet sensitive personality that connects with the audience.

Brought to earth as a Nazi experiment, fiery red chain-smoking horned demon Hellboy (Ron Perlman) looks more like the bad guy than the hero, but he makes a living out of fighting evil. The big red guy is an investigator with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, along with pyrokinetic Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and psychic humanoid Abe Sapien (Doug Jones). The team just gained a new member in the form of FBI agent John Myers (Rupert Evans), whose main job is to keep an eye on Hellboy and his at times renegade missions. They soon have more to worry about though when villain Rasputin (Karl Roden) releases a dangerous monster that threatens not only the team but the whole of humanity.

Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that they protect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.
