Professional Review of "Help"

Milkyway Images' hospital comedy, Help!!!, is a minor masterpiece in a year of pleasant surprises. Revering everything about HKSAR movie-making that others try to eradicate - notably tight schedules (21 days from idea to edit), flying paper (Wai Ka-fai says that this is the film that taught him scripts don't matter; film is film, not paper), and shameless appropriation (MASH is referenced endlessly, from the surprise spurt of blood out a patient's jugular to the surreal, anthropomorphised loudspeakers) - this has to be one of the most irresponsible, irreverent, loud-mouthed comedies to hit the screen in ages.
Having gone the character route (and what else is Needing You besides extended character work by Andy, Sammi and Fiona?) directors Wai Ka-fai and Johnnie To take a shot at the other, more Chinese, end of the spectrum and make a movie based entirely around incident. And more incident. And incidences. Incidences after incidences. Help!!! moves fast, treating San's (Cecilia Cheung's) love life with the same gravitas it gives open-heart surgery, which is to say the same gravitas it gives car repair, or cooking noodles. It's been so long since a genuinely misanthropic comedy came out that Help!!! seems even more novel than it actually is - I feel like I've never seen such a mean movie. San has to be the most self-centered character ever made, the apex of a romantic triangle, and given the fact that she's not yet 19 and already the much-lauded "Next Big Thing", she plays self-centered with the kind of Method perfection that Al Pacino brought to Scarface. I've rarely (okay - never) seen a romantic lead upstaged by a crusty old bum but I don't think a single viewer could watch this movie and not pull for the bum. Her emotional choices could only be plotted out by the most myopic of directors, and Help!!! has two of them. Let's not forget that this is the team that brought us A Hero Never Dies. Ekin comes off worse than Cecilia, his own tough guy image mocked relentlessly from first frame to last but he seems to be in on the joke (unlike Brigitte Lin Jr.). The only humanity in the movie comes from the bit players and from Jordan Chan's understandable righteous indignation (although his performance perks up immeasurably after they take that wig off him - I've never seen an actor so depressed by their wig) but it's just enough, in these "Hug Me, Love Me" times to keep the movie from tasting sour, but not enough to make it exactly nice. An episode of drunk driving in an era of sober car owners, Help!!! is welcome anarchy after so many mild-mannered movies have come and gone this year without leaving much impression. The comedy runs hot and cold, but when it's hot you'll feel it all the way through. Even cold, it's never short of inventive. by Grady Hendrix |

Remake of the American series URGENCES, this film did not convince me. The film is neither funny nor charming. Usually films with Ekin Cheng are excellent and there it is not the case |

Some of the "+ sides" of this movie are great cast withCeci, Ekin and Jordan and it's a little bit funny during the movie. And one of the main "- sides" is that the plot is totally ridiculous. Really bad story, If you want to watch a movie where ridiculous doctors just fooling around, not paying any attention on their work and so on, then you will like this movie. Or if you are a fan of Cecilia or Ekin or Jordan, you can watch it, otherwise for me, it's not a movie that I can recommand to watch. :) |

I really don't recommend this film for I really regret buying this movie. Cecelia and Ekin can't make the film to be a good one. A waste of time and energy. |
