Let me join the chorus of praise for this smoothly directed melodrama. While the plot has many twists and turns, the great cast makes it believable from start to finish. Both You Min and Wang Yin deliver unforgettably honest performances, nothing fussy or fancy, just brave and heart-wrenching. Very highly recommended for a general audience. |

Dramatic Fireworks from a Tender Actress

When Lucilla Yu Min ascended the BEST ACTRESS throne with her performance in this well made dramatic movie, one conjures many wonderful roles for this beautiful, fragile and all too lovable actress--most of which were fullfilled in the years to come, BUT, in retrospect, one wishes she could just let us see her in matured roles like a Bette Davis or Ingrid Bergman, but Lucilla's "reign" was way too short...it make it more pleasurable now to revisit her in her heyday. Her luminous eyes can send you flying to the moon, it can also break your heart with just a slight downturn, how subtle and how skillful can a great actress manipulate all our emotions, Lucilla was such a actress, I urge all of the younger generation to observe her strength and discover that way back then HK HAD many GREAT stars, in her she was more, she was a GREAT ACTRESS. |

A touching movie
|
Like most early B&W movies, the story is simple yet emotionally touching. There were no impressive hi-tech or color enhancements in those days and a movie's success depended on its plot and the efforts of the stars. You Min turned in a wonderful and effective performance which deservedly won her a best actress award at the Asian Film Festival. Her acting was fairly natural without obvious exaggeration. This movie is highly recommended. |
