Hero started out in 2001 as an immensely popular Fuji TV serial, one of the top ten rated Japanese dramas of all time. Ratings guarantee Kimura Takuya gave a memorable turn as a laidback public prosecutor with ripped jeans, unconventional working methods, and a weakness for television mail order junk. The drama was resurrected in 2006 for a TV drama special that proved every bit as popular, pulling in 30.9% viewership ratings. The SP also sets up protagonist Kuryo Kohei's return to Tokyo in the blockbuster big-screen Hero adaptation that came the following year.

Aired in Japan on July 3, 2006, the Hero TV Special picks up life with prosecutor Kuryu Kohei five years after he left Tokyo. He's just been transferred from Sapporo to a quiet seaside town in Yamaguchi, and immediately walks in on the town's first murder case in 11 years. Town hero Takita (Nakai Kiichi) seems to be implicated in the case and local authorities are afraid to take action, but Kuryu Kohei is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. Starlet Haruka Ayase (Hotaru no Hikari) and acclaimed actor Tsutsumi Shinichi (SP) co-star, and original drama cast members like Matsu Takako and Abe Hiroshi make special appearances.
