An archeologist named Hieda, who had virtually been ousted from the academy for his radical ideas, receives a letter from Yabe, a junior high school teacher, who writes that he has discovered an ancient mound built by a people who believed in evil spirits. Imagining that working on exploring the mound might reinstate him in the academy, Hieda leaves immediately to visit Yabe, only to find him missing together with a coed named Reiko.

Goblins meet their match

"Hiruko the Goblin" is not at all what I expected. It is a hilarious send-up of horror movies that manages to deliver a few scares along with its laughs. Heida (Sawada Kenji) is an archeologist so unorthodox that he has been bounced out of academe. A schoolteacher (Takenaka Naoto) with whom he attended university writes to tell him of a mysterious mound he has found; Heida knows he must investigate. However, when he arrives at his old friend's school, his friend and one of the students have gone missing and some of the schoolkids are turning dead. Never fear! Heida springs into action, wielding weapons and goblin detectors he appears to have made with loose pots and pans found in his kitchen, before switching to bug spray and a tire iron. The wide-eyed acting and cheesy special effects heighten the humor, while the spider-like goblins bearing the faces of their human victims are genuinely creepy. And, don't worry, the filmmakers didn't forget to include the mandatory spooky old janitor. "Hiruko" makes a wonderful Saturday evening popcorn flick. Recommended. |
