Shibata Jun "Hitori"- Skill Scores The singer/songwriter Shibata Jun is always blessed with creativity and inspiration. This time on "Hitori" she, literally by herself, gets 11 tracks done and assigns each of them with a unique character ranging from ballads, music-box music, jazz to rock and with different emotions. Backed up by the piano, 28-year-old Shibata Jun uses a mature voice to speak the mind of youth on "Young Girl"(Track 1). It turns out to be a song with a refreshing style without any childishness but with a sense of sophistication. The chorus of this song is also beautifully written and arranged to touch your soul. "Under Age" (Track 3) is another tune with polished melodies. However, the reviewer would appreciate natural beauty more and suggest a free and easy rendition of Shibata Jun rather than the delicately embellished one on this track. On the touching ballad "The Days with You" (Track 5), Shibata Jun manages to show off her refined vocal techniques on the high and the ending notes. "Voice of Snow" (Track 8) brings memories back to life just like those dancing snowflakes falling from the sky. The atmosphere created is remarkably magnificent. "Footprint" (Track 4) and "Sunset" (Track 7) are the two high quality pieces of piano solo with their unique characters. "Footprint" highlights the development of the tempo and the playing skills while "Sunset" looks after the mood created and the rendition. Tracks Recommended: "Young Girl", "Under Age", "The Days with You", "Voice from Snow", "Footprint~piano solo" & "Sunset~piano solo" Reviewed by Yes Lau (Hong Kong) Translated by Holly (Hong Kong) |

I bought this CD on a whim...I typically don't buy CDs with music solos on them because I like to hear singing. However, I made an exception on this (and it's only 2 short solos, that are actually quite relaxing and pleasant) and I am so glad I did! This CD is magnificent. Simply stunning. I cannot believe no one else has reviewed it yet! Everyone who does not own this CD is missing something wonderful. Jun is so talented to sing AND play all of her own piano. Her voice is sweet and mellow and delightful. She reminds me a little bit of Matsu Takako, except her songs are heavier on piano. There is no un-needed noise on this CD...it's very minimalistic, which suits the voice ideally. It's a blend of peaceful music played with passion and soothing vocals sung with love. Truly a masterpiece. I hope Jun releases something new soon. I cannot believe I just now discovered her! If you like music that is cheerfully relaxing, but not mundane and boring: BUY THIS. Even the piano solos are a treasure. |
