July 29, 2007 Major letdown!I was going to give this series 4.5 stars out of 5 until the last two episodes. The first 6 episodes, though not on par with the 36 episodes of Fatherland I, still had some of its heart. It was still very educational and touching. It was worth watching, at the very least degree, for closure purposes. However I would like to pretend the last 2 episodes did not happen. After the great build up and anticipation, the ending was a terrible letdown. It was totally inconsistent with the themes that were built in Fatherland I. Fatherland, whom I believe to be the best 36 episodes in Hong Kong TV series history, seemed pointless after the last 2 episodes. I felt totally empty after finishing this series, didn't feel there was adequate or appropriate closure.
WHAT WERE THE PRODUCERS OF FATHERLAND III thinking???? I would've rioted after the airing of the last episode if I lived in Hong Kong at the time, and I don't think I would've been alone. Heard many people closely followed this series when it aired.
I hated the main character, and again I don't think I'm alone. In my book, he's the most hated non-villian main character out of any series I've ever seen. I must commend the actor Lau Chi Wing though, for being professional and taking the chance of destroying his popularity with this role. I hope his career didn't suffer too much, as I am not sure if he had control over the script. I think I'm going to find some booze now so I can forget about the ending.

July 25, 2007 Best series ever !!!!This series is a must for anybody of Cantonese descent. You will appreciate your ancestors so much more when you see what they had to deal with. My grandmother and great grandmother said that the series was very realistic; several parts of the series brought the whole family, young and old, to tears.
Its a shame that they dont' make series like this anymore! Everything about this series was quality - the actors, the setting, the plot, and especially the attention to detail (everything flowed and all characters actions were logical). There wasn't a single wasted scene. The producers of the series and the actors showed a lot of heart in this series.
One minor negative, the ending to Fatherland (I) is a bit open-ended. For completion and satisfaction purposes you will probably want to purchase Fatherland (II) and (III). That's a big hole in your wallet :) Fatherland II was good but not great and cannot be compared to Fatherland (I). If YesAsia or anywhere else is still carrying this series (hint: best to ask to make sure they have the whole set available for purchase - not just half the series) obtain it.

Death Duel
June 18, 2007 A MUST for WUXIA FANSThe action is only mediocre when you go by todays standards. However, this film is still far superior to most wuxia films before and after it because of the storyline, acting, cinematography, and pacing. No film out there (maybe with the exception of the Swordsman I & II) better depicts the motivations and trial and tribulations of the characters in the imaginary world known as wulin (wuxia society). For the purposes of not spoiling anything, this film basically shows WHAT IS WULIN and WHY IT EXISTS. It stays focused on the characters and their motivations and wastes little time on the unnecessary love triangles and quests to learn the ultimate martial arts that hinder the pacing and storylines of so many wuxia novels and adaptations. The cinematography was very successful in conveying the very dark world these characters live in. The actors brought life and intrigue to their characters. Bonus: for those who love these films for the pretty damsels in distress, Candice Yu On-On certainly doesnt disappoint. Very hard not to fall in love with her after this film.
This film is a must for anyone who wants to understand or is a fan of the Wuxia Genre.

June 18, 2007 Had PotentialThe first 30 minutes of this film really had potential; it could have been a great dark character study. All the elements were there; an attractive woman divorces abusive and narrow-minded husband, quits social work after one of her patients commits suicide and watching another being chopped up in front of her, is unsatisfied sexually, and generally unsatisfied with her life. She has repressed memories of catching her mother committing adultery as a child, a philosophical father that likes to call up analogies between life and flowers, and an opportunity for liberation when she meets a new open-minded man. But then somehow all that interesting stuff took a back seat to the unfulfilling, underdeveloped, and generally rushed relationship between the man and the woman. The protagonist (the stunning Candice Yu) stopped being interesting after Alex Man appeared. It was like watching two separate films. First half had a great build up, second half (exposition) was somewhat rudimentary and almost cliché.
Overall, the film hovers around the slightly below average - average rating in my book.
Worth a view if you are a fan of Alex Man or Candice Yu. Candice Yu looked very, very hot and sweet in the first 20 minutes of the film, the latter curly hair didnt really work for her.
