Winner of six awards at the International Wildlife Film Festival, Missoula 1999/2000. (Best of Festival, Photography, Use of Music, Soundmix, Narration, Best Long Television Programme)!!
Swept by winds from the high arctic, the remote island of Hokkaido, with its towering volcanoes, marshy valleys and fairytale forests, is Japan’s last true wilderness.
Unlike the rest of Japan, Where the wildlife is Asian in origin, Hokkaido is strongly influenced by Siberia. Here brown bears plunge for salmon in icy streams, Blakiston’s fish owls wade for frogs and Japanese cranes perform spectacular courtship dances in the snow. The island is also a crucial winter refuge for migrants from Russia – every year stellers sea eagles plunder the spoils of the coastal fishing fleets and flocks of whopper swans avoid the arctic blizzards in sheltered lakes.
This unique mix of life has long been worshiped by the Ainu, a race of hunter-gratherers who live alongside the modern Japanese of Hokkaido, and for whom every animal, plant, rock and river has its own traditional significance. Weaving legend, prayer and dance with stunning footage, this film is a refreshing look at the island through the eyes of a rare and enigmatic people.
