Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!! (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Full Throttle!!!! Count those exclamation points, because the Mole Brothers are back and they're animated. One of the most wildly creative filmmakers working in Japan today, Ishii Katsuhito seems to take joy in dropping whimsical, unpredictable works onto unsuspecting audiences. His last film Nice no Mori (a.k.a. Funky Forest), an omnibus offering co-directed with Ishimine Hajime and Miki Shinichiro, was an ode to pure, unadulterated insanity. A film like no other, Nice no Mori now serves as inspiration for his latest release Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!!.

Surely no one saw this coming except for Ishii Katsuhito, but the nonsensical, chatterbox stand-up comedy duo from Nice no Mori now have their very own animated series. The Mole Brothers and their Beatles hairdos serve up plenty of chaos and laughter in this riotous seven-episode series that is just about required viewing for fans of the film. Ishii returns once again to his animation roots, and the results are as head-scratchingly brilliant as ever.

This release comes with the seven animated shorts, Nice no Mori trailer, and Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!! making of and filmography.

Professional Review of "Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!! (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)"

June 6, 2007

I hesitate to refer to this as a review for the simple reason that this latest effort by Japanese cult director and animator Katsuhito Ishii - The of Taste of Tea and Funky Forest fame - is incredibly resistant to any attempts at analysis. There is no story, per se, no linear thread tying anything together. It's not a film but a series of animated shorts that exist purely to extend the life of The Mole Brothers, the stand up comedy duo Ishii created for Funky Forest. It is as though Ishii has simply gone and indulged a personal whim and created a very extended in-joke, one which he is now sharing with the public. Happily, though this particular joke will simply baffle most and is by no means a good place to begin to crack the Ishii ouvre, fans of Funky Forest will be delighted.

If you've seen Ishii's previous film then you are already well familiar with this duo. They are the white suited, hyperactive and possibly bi-polar pair riffing off nonsense humor when not physically abusing each other throughout Funky Forest's run time. They continue to do the same here with one notable exception: they are now CG animated rather than actual people. There are seven shorts in all for a total run time of thirty-six minutes, six of the shorts capturing different stage performances while the middle performance offers a back stage glimpse of their daily life. They squabble, they argue, they sing and dance, and they hit each other A LOT. The mouths never stop moving except for those moments when Ishii indulges one of his surreal whims and inserts a sudden burst of science fiction action, a giant monster, a yakuza gangster, a competing comedy duo or the like. Don't look for a point, don't look for it to make a lot of sense, this is purely about high energy entertainment.

Japanese stand up comedy is a strange thing, most playing in duos but by entirely different rules than what you see in the west. There is no straight man in stand up, no set up and resolution. Rather, Japanese comics engage in a frenzied game of one-upmanship, each trying to beat the other to the punch in a mad, surreal rush. It's rapid fire, seldom pauses, and is very much an acquired taste for western eyes. And even by Japanese standards these guys go quick. Meaning? For every one person who gets it - and those people will get it hard - there will probably be ten or so more who experience as little more than a stream of noise. There won't be middle ground on this. You will love it or you will despise it.

The obvious question you might put to Ishii is if he wanted to bring these characters back and do so in a format that has them simply performing live stand up, then why animate? Why not bring back the original actors? Well, it actually makes a good amount of sense once you get into it. Ishii has used a style of CG animation built around high resolution facial scans of the original actors, both of whom return to supply the voices. He then takes these faces and sticks them on bodies just slightly disproportionate, slightly rubbery, and able to bend - if not break - the rules of physics. He is taking characters that began as essentially living cartoons and pushing them out to their logical conclusion, allowing himself to create a recognizable but slightly off kilter world where the weirdness and odd bursts of violence work far better than they would in live action. Half an hour of this with live actors would be tedious, but half an hour of animation gives Ishii enough room to play and invent such that it stays fresh throughout.

The DVD release is basic in terms of extras - trailers and an interview are all that are included - but the picture quality and English subtitling are both excellent, though I'd wager that the English text simplifies the Japanese dialogue a fair amount simply because if they'd gone word for word it'd never have all fit on screen. As it is you need to read fast. It certainly won't be for everyone but Hokuro Kyodai Full Throttle!!!! is significantly more than a simple vanity piece for completists. It's a worthy expansion of Ishii's very odd world.

Stand-Up Comedy From Another Dimension
For a concentrated dose of brilliant insanity, there's nothing quite like Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!!. This hectic collection of animated shorts from Ishii Katsuhito is an extension of the even more hectic world that is Nice no Mori (a.k.a. Funky Forest: The First Contact). Those who have seen the film will automatically appreciate this collection, and those who haven't have nothing to worry about, because Hokuro Brothers does not operate by any rhyme or reason. It is a singularly stupefying piece, and by and large a lot more accessible and likable than the film that spawned it.

Despite my great film nerd desire to embrace it, I found Nice no Mori to be fairly underwhelming, an overlong hit-or-miss exercise in gratuitous oddity that failed to be anywhere as entertaining or crazy as expected. But there are certainly parts of the film that I love, among them the Hokuro Brothers (or Mole Brothers in translation), an over-the-top motor-mouthed stand-up comedy duo with a penchant for slapping. And sure enough, unwitting viewers won't quite know what hit them when the Brothers crank into center stage action for their very own anime sketch show. The mile-a-minute, oddly timed, ADD Mad Hatter humor takes some getting used to, as there are no clear punchlines - though plenty of punches - and prolonged exposure would probably cause great damage to either you or your television. But in short doses, Hokuro Brothers is simply hilarious. Watch it with a friend, and admire each other's widened eye, quizzical eyebrow, deer-in-headlight expressions.

The Hokuro Brothers are crazy enough as humans in Nice no Mori, but as cartoons, things just go to a whole new dimension of topsy turvy. Ishii Katsuhito started his career in animation, and understands and appreciates the form enough to seamlessly subvert it in these mind-boggling shorts. Free to hit each other to their hearts' content, the Brothers fall, sway, fly, slink, roll, and bounce every which way against a cheesy desktop wallpaper background, compounded by sudden flight-of-fancy sequences and occasional guest stars like competing comedians and an angry dinosaur. And they're talking non-stop the entire time. Amidst the unpredictable chaos and hysterics come brief and sudden moments of enlightenment, when the nonsensical humor falls magically into place in your head, before falling apart again with the next round of punches. I also found myself rather mesmerized by the microphone, which has the gleam and composition of Bust-a-Move bubbles and hypnotically floats to and fro like a gel Weeble.

With six crazy stand-up comedy sketches and one amusingly toned-down behind-the-scenes segment, Hokuro Brothers Full Throttle!!!! is just too ridiculous to pass up. The whole project comes with the surreal aura of a 2 a.m. brainstorm that should have been vetoed in the boardroom but somehow got made instead. Sure, it verges on self-indulgence, but it also manages to entertain on so many levels. Does this mean the Guitar Brothers and Babbling Hot Spring Vixens will be animated next? One can only hope.
