落難秀才許金梅在慈航寺中巧遇官家小姐蘇貞玉，兩人一見鍾情，貞玉更故意留下手巾以表情意。兩人雖互相鍾情，但貞玉早已許配給紈袴子弟周炎為妻，貞玉雖萬般不肯，但婚事仍逐步進行。而金梅靠著姨娘王九媽的幫忙，終於得以藉送禮之由進入蘇府送還手巾，兩人在繡房中見面，後來在陰錯陽差之下，金梅困於房中無法離開，而與貞玉共度一夜，兩人謹守分寸、情意彌堅。
