Derek Yee (One Nite in Mongkok) directs action superstar Jackie Chan in this gripping and violent crime thriller that ranks among 2009's most eagerly anticipated Hong Kong films. Chan takes on a rare dramatic role as a Chinese immigrant who becomes inexorably tied to the Japanese mob. No stranger to tough drama, Yee gives Shinjuku Incident an added relevance with his exploration of Chinese migrants fending for themselves in Tokyo's seedy Shinjuku district. Aiding Yee is an impressive Asian cast, starting with Chan and including Hong Kong's Daniel Wu (Protégé), China's Fan Bing Bing (Lost in Beijing) and Xu Jing Lei (Warlords), and Japan's Takenaka Naoto (Shall We Dance?) and Kato Masaya (Brother). Before its successful spring theatrical run, Shinjuku Incident served as the opening film at the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival.
The Beast Stalker (dir. Dante Lam, 2008)
Beast Cops director Dante Lam returns to his best genre with the 2008 crime thriller The Beast Stalker. Playing cop again after Invisible Target, Nicholas Tse faces off against Nick Cheung (Connected) whose turn as a relentless kidnapper earned him the 2008 Hong Kong Film Critics Society Best Actor Award. Featuring action direction by Stephen Tung Wai (Painted Skin, Purple Storm), this gritty, tightly knit thriller loads in the high-speed car chases and intense action scenes amid the fatalistic cycle of crime, coincidence, and consequence that ties the story's perpetrators and victims together. Zhang Jingchu (Protege) co-stars as the kidnap victim's mother, along with character actor Liu Kai Chi, television star Derek Kwok, and Nick Cheung's real-life wife, television actress Esther Kwan, who does the Cantonese dubbing for his onscreen wife Miao Pu. Screened at the 59th Berlin Film Festival, The Beast Stalker has turned into a hit both at the box office and with critics.
Connected (dir. Benny Chan, 2008)
It's Hong Kong's turn to borrow from Hollywood. Director Benny Chan (Invisible Target) adapts the 2004 Hollywood film Cellular for Asian audiences with Connected, an entertaining and suspenseful thrill ride that proved popular with audiences during its 2008 theatrical release. Hong Kong's Louis Koo (Rob-B-Hood) stars as the everyman hero played in the Hollywood version by Chris Evans, and the filmmakers have added a romantic subplot by casting Taiwan's Barbie Xu (Meteor Garden) in the role originated by the older Kim Basinger. As the film's black-clad villain, Mainland actor Liu Ye (Blood Brothers) exudes over-the-top, entertaining menace. Rounding out the cast are Nick Cheung (Exiled) as a stalwart traffic cop, with Louis Fan (The Moss), Eddie Cheung (Election), TVB actor Wong Cho Lam and model Ankie Beilke in key supporting roles.

A traffic accident changed their lives forever.
In capturing wanted criminal Zhang Yidong, Sergeant Tang Fei was involved in a gunfight and car accident that put the criminal in a coma. But in the process he also crippled an fellow officer, and mistakenly shot dead the elder daughter of public prosecutor and single mother Gao Min. Unable to handle the guilt, Tang Fei succumbs to a fog of pain. Gao Min, meanwhile, pours all her love and attention to her younger daughter Ling.
Three months later, the criminal Zhang Yidong awakens from his coma. Gao Min, who had been working hard on bringing him to justice, insists he stand trial immediately.

Bob(Louis Koo)'s life isn't going well at all. A single father in a dead-end job as a debt collector, he's trapped in a job that goes against his usual easy-going helpful nature and he's under tremendous pressure to be a better dad, a better brother, a better worker, even a better person. While dealing with all this and his sister(Flora Chan)’s threat to move to China with his son to force him to clean up his act, Bob receives a call out of the blue. It’s a stranger called Grace(Barbie Hsu) who claims a mysterious kidnapper(Liu Ye) is keeping her against her will and begs him to save her and her young daughter. Is it just a heartless prank? The detective(Nick Cheung) he tried reporting the call to seems to think so but Bob’s instincts tell him that he may just be the only thing standing between them and a painful death. But does he have the mettle to rise above his own self-centred concerns and risk everything – including his own son – for two people he has never met and who may not even exist?
