YesAsia Editorial Description
Director Inoue Umetsugu crowds the Shawscope frame with brilliant colors and magical music numbers in Hong Kong Rhapsody, a winning musical much like his previous Shaw Brothers hit, Hong Kong Nocturne. Peter Chen Hou is a nightclub magician juggling two women (Angela Yu Qian and Helen Ma) and some difficult debt. When the women tire of his lady killer routine, he makes a quick getaway, along with a new "son", a gift from a late magician friend. The two hide out in a swank mansion, and soon Peter discovers that the "son" is really a daughter, the youthful and sexy Li Ching. What follows are myriad musical numbers, as the two find friendship and even a little heartache on the road to better lives and happy times. Hong Kong Rhapsody is a movie-lovers dream, mixing light-hearted romance and winning happenstance with heart-tugging melodrama. Like the best musicals from either Hong Kong or Hollywood, Hong Kong Rhapsody is an airy, romantic confection which delights in a candy-coated, optimistic worldview that's both charming and undeniably seductive!

HONG KONG RHAPSODY
There's nothing like a good, opulent gaudy musical tolife the spirits, but when it's a 1960's Hong Kong musical orchestrated by a Japanese director and composer, it breaks through the ranks as a classic of campy kitsch. A follow-up to the previous year's megahit Hong Kong Nocturne, with the same Japanese creative team, Hong Kong Rhapsody follows the fortuness of an umemployed magician whose love life is so knotty it would take Houdini to unravel!
- 隨碟附送2003年限量版座^月曆 (精選12幅極具珍藏價值的劇照)

Dated, gaudy, formulaic, yet fun and entertaining.

'Hong Kong Rhapsody' (1966) is a fun and entertaining time capsule from 1966. Some sources claim that it's a remake of 'Jazz on Parade 1954 nen: Tokyo Cinderella musume'(1954), also directed by director Inoue Umetsugu(alias Inoue Umeji and Jin Shang Mei Dz). Umetsugu may have been brought on board at the Shaw Brothers studio to raise the technical quality for their films. I have been a Li Ching fanboy ever since I saw this film on a depressing day in the Summer of 2004; I wanted to live again after watching this film(just like the Lin Chin Fu character). Jin Shang Mei Dz's attempts at drama are hardly subtle, but he does know how to add fun and flavor to a film. The late Peter Chen Ho is a welcome presence in this film even though his Chen Tsz-hsin character is charismatic, yet dubious. Li Ching is one unconventional starlet: she has a somewhat rotound physique, but her flying saucer eyes, charisma, sensuality, and solid acting abilities more than compensate for her lack of a "common starlet figure". 'Hong Kong Rhapsody' is highly recommended! |

A 60's SB movie starred with Asian movie queen Li Ching and Chen Ho. Simple story plot with many musical performances... Probably it is still worth watching Li Ching's superb acting. |
