Released in June 2006, Hoshizora Kiseki is a 27-minute anime from CoMix Wave, the same team behind Shinkai Makoto's 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Place Promised In Our Early Days. The connection is immediately recognizable as the soft animation aesthetic, leisurely pacing, and sci-fi themes present in Shinkai's works can also be seen here. Directed by Watanabe Akio and Matsubara Toshikazu, the story revolves around Kozue, a young girl who loves to gaze at the stars. One night during a meteorite-gazing excursion, she meets Ginga, a boy conducting astronomical research inside a protective suit. Because of his mysterious ability to connect with stars, Ginga's research is extremely important, and his daily life is completely decided upon by the scientists he works for. Kozue encourages Ginga to take off his suit and take control of his life.
