Three years after Nabbie's Love, writer-director Nakae Yuji offers another delightful comedy set on the balmy island of Okinawa. Based on Nakasone Miiko's same-titled manga, Hotel Hibiscus sees the world through the eyes of an adventurous young girl. Bright, sunny, and wholly enjoyable, the film follows young Mieko, portrayed by Kurashita Honami, on her episodic summer capers like her trip to the pineapple fields and her search for a spirit on the US military base. Then of course there's the daily comings and goings of her very eccentric and very international family - her brother is African-American and her sister is Caucasian - and their rundown "hotel" which has only one guest room. Co-starring Yo Kimiko, Wada Toshihiro, singer Teruya Masao, and Nabbie's Love grandma Taira Tomi, Hotel Hibiscus's humorous and heartwarming romp through Mieko's long and hot summer has the pleasant, lolling atmosphere and childhood magic of a live-action Ghibli film.
