Just Beautiful
|
Although on a song to song basis this isn't Fayray's best work, as an album it's a very beautiful sounding CD. Fayray has one of the best voices in any language on any continent. I don't really care for the all English songs, but I love when she mixes the two languages. The only disappointment I have is now I'll have to wait a year or two until her next release. |

Hmm, I assume the above reviewer was after standard J-Pop fare, and if that's what you expect from this album, you too will be disappointed (and, if you'd still like to hear Fayray, you might be better off with one of her other albums, particularly the first two). As for me, I bought her third album, Shiroi Hana, and was quite disappointed to hear largely good songs destroyed by a sterile studio sound and overproduction, not to mention far too few songs with Fayray herself on piano. All the problems I had with the last release have been fixed on Hourglass (and perhaps her departure from Avex has something to do with the more relaxed sound of this album). As the prior reviewer stated, this album tends to be very slow on the whole, but in a moody, stripped-down, organic sense, which is refreshing to hear in the age of Ayaya and Ayu. A summary of tracks follows: 1. first time - The first of the two all-English songs on this album, but don't worry, Fayray ain't Utada - she may be Japanesy, but she's not cheesy (forgive me for that, but Utada deserves any jabs I can get in, even lame ones) on this slow track with only double bass accompanying the piano and vocals. 2. negai - This ballad is gaining popularity at karaoke places around here, and it's easy to hear why with its beautiful vocal melody. 3. saishode saigono koi - The simple arpeggiated acoustic guitar and understated percussion here remind me of Jewel's first album. Excellent. 4. The most uptempo track here. A rock number with a fantastic Bruce Hornsby-esque piano part and uplifting vocal melody combined with a very busy drumbeat. 5. momino ki - A solo piano performance of a Jean Sibelius piece. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well this worked with the rest of the album, unlike the classical-style piece on Shiroi Hana. 6. shiroi nigatsu - The slow tempo, electronic strings, and angelic vocals remind me a bit of Enya, but Fayray's voice has infinitely more character. 7. michi - Another rock song with acoustic guitar solos and what sounds like an electronic organ piped through Leslie speakers. Good stuff. 8. look into my eyes - A fairly typical Fayray ballad. The initial slow piano builds into a more energetic second half. The vocal melody is catchy, as I expect from Fayray. 9. living without you - The second English track, and arguably the better of the two. Again, very little here but piano and strings, but Fayray does a lot with it, especially on the slightly cacophonic, but very cool solo. 10. kuchizuke - One of the singles. Beautiful minor-key composition. 11. aishitemo aishi tarinai - One of my favorites, along with "feel." A slightly jazzy number with a barroom piano feel and some powerful vocal work, particularly on the choruses, which are augmented with horns. This reminds me a bit of her earlier b-side version of "Big Spender." 12. namae - Maybe the weakest track on the album, but that doesn't mean it's skip-worthy. Another great vocal performance over a simple piano part. So there you have it. In summary, this isn't a dance album or typical pop fare, but if you're after an album that bucks recent trends in Japanese music and doesn't easily grow tiresome, this might be for you. |

IT'S OK...
|
First, this singer is an alto, which is not my personal prefernce (I enjoy soprano singers more). Secondly, she has almost three songs entirely in English with no so much as one word in Japanese in them. The songs are slow, but almost too much so. I guess it might be great for some people...she does have talent, but for me and my tastes, it's merely OK. I doubt I'll play this CD very much at all. |
