YesAsia Editorial Description

Following up his award-winning martial-arts drama Hero, director Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern) tells an intricately detailed love story in the swordfighting epic House of Flying Daggers, set during the final days of the Tang Dynasty. A mysterious group called the Flying Daggers is a dangerous threat to the government, so police captain Leo (Andy Lau) sends his right-hand man, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro), undercover to try to find the rebels' location. Jin, a notorious playboy, pretends he is a roving warrior called "Wind" and befriends Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a blind dancer who is believed to be the daughter of the former leader of the Daggers. As he leads her across the countryside, they are "attacked" by government soldiers - but these battles are staged by Leo in order to convince Mei that Jin is on her side. But when a general orders that Mei must be captured at any cost, the fighting turns real, and Jin must decide between his loyalty to his job and his growing love for Mei. Meanwhile, Mei battles her feelings for Jin as well, trying to hide her true self. Zhang's gorgeous, compelling film is filled with beautiful singing and dancing, marvelous costumes, and wonderful locations; the scene in the Bamboo Forest is unforgettable, as is the Echo Game, which Leo and Mei play in the Peony Pavilion. There are also twists throughout the film and by the time the end comes, audiences will be spinning their heads in awe and amazement at the neverending wonders of this special movie. The film is dedicated to Anita Mui, who was to have a starring role before her unexpected death.

House of Flying Daggers Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Okay I guess. The whole story seemed like it was a bit rushed and some parts were dragged on too long. A lot of the movie I had to close my eyes throughout because of all the kissing. I mean people would be standing there talking and then all of a sudden there was kissing [bleck]. I do like it better than when I first watched it but that was because I was only 8 and a didn't understand government business and I had trouble following the story [it didn't help that I fell asleep.] Save your money and buy Return of the Condor Heroes, Xiao Ao Jiang Hu, or A Chinese Odyssey 2002. The ending was also kind of as my dad put it "depressing".
The scenery was pretty though

Strangely Intriguing O.o Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This movie seemed all-over-the-place to me, but yet I enjoyed it regardless. Some of the acting was pretty bad in parts but the visuals were beautiful and interesting. Once I started watching it, for some reason, I was drawn into the complicated storyline and characters. Zhang Ziyi is a very simple and plain-looking girl but is a pretty good actress some of the time. The ending is beautiful but sad in its way. While I do find this movie often forgettable compared to better Chinese action/romances, it didn't give me that "i can't believe i wasted 2 hours of my life on this!" feeling. I thought the sexual parts brought down the quality of the movie not to mention they were kind of funny and odd!! O.o Anyyyyyyyyywaaay! It's a fair movie, but nothing I'd watch more than 2 times or recommend to someone looking for a good Asian film. O.O nuh-uh.

Visual Poetry Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is my favourite film in the world. Yes, ive read that some people think the story is weak, that the ending is melodramatic etc, etc. I couldnt care less. This film will fill up your senses with its beautiful use of colour (the costumes, sets and out-door scenery is the best my eyes have ever experienced on film), music (the soundtrack is superb) and the particularly spectacular action scenes. This film to me is visual poetry...I went through every emotion possible with this drama and have watched it time and time again and still feel the same about it. Yi Mou Zhang is a genius as far as I am concerned. I cannot wait for his next offering. The lead actors are gorgeous and credible and if film is there to make you really FEEL, feel I most certainly did.

so so Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
The movie was visual and gorgeous...but the story line was awful. It was far too predictable, you could tell what was going to happen, and who was going to kill who. I also felt that falling in love in three days is laughably fake. It took a lot away from the believeability of the film, and added a callow, childish element to it. I did like the scenes and outfits of the movie too, though. The movie could have been much better. Also, the kissing scenes were pretty bad. It looks like it was agonizing for them to kiss each other! If its that bad, dont do it!
