So-fung is an orphan who lives with her aunt. She is in love with her cousin Tsang Man-ching, but old Mr. Tsang wants his son to marry Sze-yee. Man-ching is miserable over his father's decision. So-fung decides to stay the rest of her life with the Tsangs. Sze-yee gives birth to a son, Ting. Fifteen years later, the Tsangs' fortunes are on the decline. Old Tsang is ill. Though well looked after by So-fung, he buys himself a coffin in preparation for his coming death. One Mid-Autumn Festival, Sze-yee makes some excuse to vent her frustration against Man-ching and So-fung. At the same time, creditors arrive. Old Tsang is so agitated that he faints and is sent to the hospital. Man-ching feels the situation is hopeless and goes abroad to make his living. On the day when old Tsang is discharged from the hospital and arrives home, creditors arrive and try to take his coffin. Tsang cannot stand it and dies. Just then Man-ching arrives home broke. So-fung blames him for not being able to support the family. Man-ching feels she is right and decides to leave home again. Sze-yee thinks that he is leaving with So-fung and kills herself with an overdose. The family falls to pieces. After the upheavals, Ting is sent to a boarding school. Man-ching finds a job and asks So-fung to join him. The two can finally be together.
