YesAsia Editorial Description

A stunning, sensational performance from Josephine Siao Fong Fong highlights Hu-Du-Men, an acclaimed drama from playwright Raymond To Kwok Wai and director Shu Kei. The "Hu-Du-Men" (loosely translated as "stage door") is an imaginary line separating the stage from reality, and a line that must be crossed each and every night by Sum (Josephine Siao), the aging star of a Cantonese Opera troupe. Nearing the twilight of a storied career, Sum must face a variety of challenging new obstacles, including the possible emigration of her family come 1997, the appearance of a promising young actress (Anita Yuen), the hiring of a Western-schooled stage director (David Wu), the surprising revelation of her daughter's sexuality, and finally the reappearance of a shocking secret from her past. Through it all, Sum must retain her professionalism and dignity, as the "Hu-Du-Men" between the stage and her life begins to blur. Emotional, intimate direction and Raymond To's intelligent, relevant screenplay make Hu-Du-Men worthwhile cinema, but it's Josephine Siao's brilliant, emotionally dynamic performance which sets this film above the rest.

Go Jo Jo Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It's been quite a while since Josephine Siao made any movies. Back in the 60s, the 7 movie princesses (Josephine Siao, Patrina Fong, Connie Chan, Fiona Sit included) were at the top of their game. I was and still is a fan of all 4 of them and remembered when at one stage all 7 decided to call it quits. They got married within a couple of years of giving up showbiz.

This movie only goes to show what good basic acting background can do for you even if you haven't shot one in years. Josephine is still at the top and it's so wonderful to see her donning opera costumes and singing a couple of bars of canto opera.

I understand the script is a true story and yes, back in those days, many top opera actors do really sacrifice a lot for their career.

Ms Siao Fong Fong at her best. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
No doubt Ms Siao Fong Fong is a screen legend. She has many hits in her career from childhood to her teens. But I find Fu Du Men and Summer Snow is her best dramatic roles. I will only give Fu a 9 ( because as pretty as Anita Yun is I find it's very hard to convince the audience that she can sing as an opera star and Daniel is too young to match up with Anita ) . Ms Tam on the other hand is a perfect cast. and a funny cameo by Piano Lee. Another great work by playwright Raymond To Kwok Wai and director Shu Kei.

Nice Human Drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
No violence, no sex, no profanity. Just a sentimental and heartfelt portrait of a middle-aged Cantonese Opera Star both on and off stage stunningly portrayed by Josephine Xiao. The audience gets to see the conflicts, regrets, love and loathing that occurs between her and her opera troupe family and her real family. A little mawkish, politically correct and too sweet but at least the whole family can watch it. This was Josephine's next to last film before retirement and a fitting swan swong. Excellent print & sound quality.

funny cantonese opera Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I really don´t like cantonese opera or any opera at all, but this movie was really funny and showed the life behind the scenes of an opera artist. But I must say the english subtitles were hard to read! Anita Yuen didn´t convince me that she could sing opera, not her best acting at all. Daniel Chan looked too young in comparison to Anita, except that the movie was a great piece of work.
