20世紀80年代江南小鎮，寡婦阿桃的獨子通州在學校運動會上為救一個小同學斷了一條腿。阿桃吃盡千辛萬苦，帶著兒子四處求醫不果，卻先後意外地收養了三個被遺棄的殘疾孩子籃子、南飛和月月，組成了一個特殊的家庭。然而在孩子們尚未成年的時候，阿桃卻因積勞成疾病倒了，不久便離開了人世……
十幾年後，通州因腿殘使他求職無門。無臂南飛整天躲在家裏不願見人。月月考上師範，但是沒多久被勸其退學。原因是查出月月患有精神病。籃子和月月爭吵，籃子一氣之下離開了家，來到了省城遇到了田野，田野把她帶回了家。籃子見到了田野的父親——音樂學院的教授田明。為了生活通州開了一家小超市，退學在家的月月已患上了白血病……月月和殘聯工作人員龍俊相識、相戀，龍俊發現了月月竟然是神經病患者，無奈之下與之分手……
同父異母的兄妹相戀；拋棄孩子之後的良心譴責；為了道義是否拋棄愛情；面對世俗是否爭取自己的幸福……
