故事發生在抗日戰爭時期陜甘寧邊區，在毛主席對全黨全軍發出“自己動手，豐衣足食”號召後，邊區獨立團接受命令，準備執行大生產任務。此時一直試圖消滅獨立團一股日軍也借此機會，對獨立團展開了瘋狂的進攻。
擔任獨立團尖刀連連長的周雲彪（呂行飾）機智勇敢，對外率領尖刀連頑強戰鬥、在敵眾我寡的惡劣形勢中，多次打退日軍的大規模進攻；對內他與打入我方的特務姦細機智週旋，一次又一次識破敵人的險惡陰謀，使我方化險為夷。
柳紅梅（曾黎飾）、紅石榴（劉孜飾）和周安娜（李倩飾）成長于不同的環境，她們各懷內心情愫走入獨立團，在周雲彪人格力量的感召下，對其產生了真摯的情感。但在民族大義面前，在硝煙戰火的歷練之中，四人之間複雜的感情糾葛也無法阻礙三位弱女子逐步成為堅定的革命主義戰士。
