YesAsia Editorial Description
The last days of the Shang Dynasty are vividly recreated in The Last Woman of Shang, an epic historical drama starring the late Linda Lin Dai. The ruthless Emperor Chou (Shin Yeong Gyn) is the final ruler of Shang, whose deceptive good nature hides a terrifying violent side. When a neighboring noble, Su Hu (Tien Feng), refuses to pay a stiff tribute to the Emperor, Chou is incensed, and orders Su Hu's execution. Afterwards, Chou brings Su Hu's daughter Da Ji (Linda Lin) to the capital, and forces her to marry him. Unwilling at first, Da Ji seems to finally accept the sad realities of Emperor Chou's reign, but something else drives her: revenge. Along with her attendant Chi Yan (Ting Hung), Da Ji plots the downfall of the Emperor from the inside. With tense political intrigue and glorious, epic battle sequences, The Last Woman of Shang is a lush Shaw Brothers epic that features Linda Lin at her absolute best. The Last Woman of Shang was Lam's final completed film before she tragically committed suicide at the age of 30.
Beyond the Great Wall (1964)
Beyond the Great Wall features one of Linda Lin's finest performances, as Wang Chao Chun, one of the Emperor's many concubines who desired to be his favorite. However, her existence in the palace takes a detour when she's tricked into marrying the leader of the Huns. Her sacrifice averts war, but it dooms the unfortunate heroine to a life unlike the one she desired. Beyond the Great Wall is a stirring tale of sacrifice and epic tragedy, and features the wonderful sets, costumes, and Mandarin songs that Shaws' Huangmei Operas are known for. Based on a true story, Beyond the Great Wall captures the legendary Linda Lin in a glamorous, heartbreakingly tragic performance.
The Magnificent Concubine (1962) After helming the award-winning musical The Kingdom And The Beauty, director Li Han Hsiang continued to dabble in the genre with The Magnificent Concubine, a Shaw Brothers Huangmei Opera starring Li Li Hua, Yan Jun, Yan Chi Ching, and Li Xiang Jun! Although there have been numerous film adaptations of the popular Chinese romance, this 1960 film is perhaps the most famous of them all. Also known by the alternative title Yang Kwei Fei, the film takes place during the 8th century. Yan Jun (from Lady Jade Locket) plays the role of an emperor with a weakness for his concubine, the comely Yang Kwei Fei (Li Li Hua, from The Three Sinners and Between Tears And Smiles), who convinces him to leave the day-to-day matters of ruling the nation to his Prime Minister (Yang Chi Ching), a man who just so happens to be Yang Kwei Fei's brother. Unfortunately for the Chinese people, the Prime Minister is a wicked, egotistical leader whose royal edicts end up leaving the country in disarray. When the cruel Prime Minster refuses to compensate some devoted royal guards for their services, a coup d'etat is put into effect. But what happens when they come looking for Yang Kwei Fei? Will Yang Kwei Fei and her ailing beloved survive this ordeal?
