瑞與鶯萬種相思，唯姻緣無望。崔家巧婢紅娘，見二人受相思煎熬，為瑞、鶯穿針引線長談一宵。夫人聞訊，以為瑞與鶯已鵲橋暗渡。紅娘能言善辯，順水推舟將錯就錯，並說服崔答應婚事，但瑞先要取得功名才可與鶯偕伉儷。瑞去後，恆發難，崔為息事寧人，再一次悔約，匆忙返鄉把鶯嫁與恆。紅娘暗中李代桃僵，待瑞高中狀元後，終與鶯成眷屬。
Pujiao Temple is under siege by rebels who try to force Chui Ang-ang, daughter of the Prime Minister, to marry their leader. Madam Chui promises whoever gets them out of the siege can marry her daughter. Cheung Kwan-shui puts up at Pujiao Temple where he meets An, writes to the White Horse General to send troops to the rescue and chase the rebels away. He helps Chui to subdue the intruding bandits, but the matriarch goes back on her agreement of marrying Ang to him and only allows Shui and Ang to greet each other as brother and sister. Instead, she promises her hand to Ang's cousin Cheng Hang, the wealthiest man around.
Though Shui and Ang are madly in love with each other, marriage is nowhere in sight. Witty maid Hung-neung acts as a go-between for the lovers. When Chui hears of the rendezvous, she thinks Shui and Ang have an intimate relationship. Hung-neung seizes upon the misunderstanding and convinces Chui to give her consent to their marriage. Chui is reluctantly agreed, on condition that Shui scores well in the national examination. After Shui has left, Hang pushes for marriage. To pacify the situation, Chui once again breaks her promise to Shui, and hurries home to make preparations for Ang's marriage to Hang. Hung-neung plays a trick and substitutes herself as the bride. The wedding takes place after Shui becomes the Number One Scholar.
