Hurrah! For Freedom

YesAsia Editorial Description

Viva Freedom takes viewers back to a glorious Korean era !

This moving classic revolves about a painful chapter in Korean history when its government was still ruled by the Japanese colonial troops.

Han Joon (Jeon Chang-keun) is a member of the resistance force that toils for the restoration of the country under the regime of the Japanese army in the mid 1945. Fleeing from the enemy he gets shot, but is saved by nurse Hye Ja (Hwang Yui-hee). Even though the two gradually develop feelings of love for each other, Han hesitates because he believes that his main interest should be the re-establishment of his nation. Soon the Japanese militia is on their tails again and Han & Hye pledge to offer them strong opposition …

Viva Freedom whose script was written by Jeon Chang-keun that also took up the leading role was the premier Korean movie to feature an anti-Japanese theme. Its director Choi In-gyu made many films even before the liberation of Korea at the end of the Second World War. At that time Choi co-operated with Yang Ju-nam who turned into Korea's very first film editor. After watching Viva Freedom politician Chiang Kai-shek saluted Korea in one of his writings.

Scarred remnant of classic film Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
"Hurrah! For Freedom" as released by the Korean Film Archive unfortunately is a truncated remnant of the original film, missing twenty minutes of its original running length. Deterioration of the original film stock destroyed the film's dramatic concluding scenes and has left many gaps in the story. Worse, due to the defection to North Korea of one cast member, all of that actor's scenes were snipped from the film. What remains gives only a hint of why the film drew big audiences upon its 1946 debut.

Han Joon (Jeon Chang-keun) and a fellow freedom fighter escape from prison with Japanese soldiers in hot pursuit. Han Joon's buddy is shot dead, but Han Joon manages to get away. (When we see a close-up of the dead man's face, a different actor's face is used. Han Joon's pal was a bearded, thin-faced man; the close-up shows a clean-shaven, round-faced man.) Han Joon hooks up with fellow rebels to plot the ouster of their Japanese occupiers, while sleeping in the home of pretty young nurse Hye Ja (Hwang Ryuh-hee) and her mother; Hye Ja quickly develops a girlish crush for the rebel. There is a rift among the Korean resisters; some favor immediate action against the Japanese, while others urge a caution.

One of the rebels is arrested while trying to steal dynamite; Han Joon daringly rescues him, stabbing to death the Japanese soldier who had been escorting the colleague to jail. Now on the run, Han Joon hides out in the apartment of a woman of loose morals (Yoo Kye-sun) who quickly falls for him. When he departs, she follows, but they soon are trapped by the Japanese. Wounded by a bullet, Han Joon is captured and placed in a hospital where pretty Hye Ja attends him. He asks her to take the big risk of helping him escape. Will the young nurse put her life on the line to help her country and the freedom fighter she loves?

Melodrama is at the heart of what remains of "Hurrah! For Freedom", although some of that melodrama is undercut by odd acting choices. For example, in an impassioned exchange between Jeon Chang-keun and Yoo Kye-sun, their clashing acting styles make the scene inadvertently hilarious, with Ms. Yoo emoting up a storm while Mr. Jeon remains absolutely stone-faced. The truncated film leaves the story episodic, interrupting the narrative flow. "Hurrah! For Freedom" is most suitable for students of Korean film history.
