A funny and poignant comedy/drama, Hush! is the third film from director Ryosuku Hashiguchi, and an intimate look at individuals coping with Japan's rigid family-centric society. Naoya (Kazuya Takahashi) is an openly gay young man who frequents Shinjuku's thriving gay scene. One night, he meets and bonds with closeted gay Katsuhiro (Seiichi Tanabe). The two seem set on the road to romance, but a third person enters the picture: Asako (Reiko Kataoka), a thirtysomething woman who wishes to leave her past behind and have a baby. By chance, Asako meets Katsuhiro - and she suddenly decides that this is the perfect man to father her child! The problems with her desire are numerous, as are the troubles facing three individuals who strain against the norms of Japanese society. How will these three reconcile their personal desires and perceived places in society at large? Director Ryosuku Hashiguchi sensitively explores the role of homosexuals in modern Japan, but ultimately creates a more complete and involving document about three individuals trying to find personal success and fulfillment in a society that may frown upon them. Full of a poignancy and arresting truth that's intelligent and compelling, Hush! provides ample evidence of Ryosuku Hashiguchi's talent and prodigious filmmaking ability.
