드디어 국내에 소개되는 L'Arc～en～Ciel의 리드보컬 'Hyde'의 첫 번째 솔로작 [Roentgen]의 영어버전. 부드러운 감성이 담긴 매력적인 목소리로 노래하는 그의 이번 솔로 앨범은 'L'Arc～en～Ciel'과는 조금 다른 나른한 팝 사운드를 담고 있다.

HYDE's First Solo Album

프랑스어로 “하늘에 떠 있는 다리(무지개)” 라는 의미인 일본의 최정상 4인조 록밴드 “L'Arc-en-Ciel (라르크-앙-시엘)”. hyde (하이드/보컬), tetsu (테츠/기타), ken (켄/베이스), yukihiro (유키히로/드럼)으로 구성된 이들은 94년에 데뷔하여 현재에 이르기까지 일본과 아시아의 재팬록팬들의 마음을 사로잡으며, 일본의 빌보드지인 오리콘 챠트 싱글, 앨범 챠트를 최다 점령하는 멀티 밀리언 셀러 록밴드로서 그 명성을 떨쳐왔다.

현재 록밴드로의 그룹활동에 잠시의 휴지기간을 가지고 있는 이들은 각자의 솔로 프로젝트를 발표, 이미 테츠와 유키히로가 2001년 상반기에 각각 솔로 싱글을 발표하였다. 많은 팬들이 가장 궁금해 하던 보컬리스트인 하이드의 솔로프로젝트는 테츠, 유키히로에 이어 오히려 가장 나중에 발표되었으나, 싱글 3장에 연이어 앨범 “ROENTGEN (렌트겐)”까지 발표, 대만과 홍콩에서의 프로모션 활동등, 멤버 중 가장 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

HYDE의 SOLO ENGLISH 앨범 ROENTGEN 드디어 국내상륙!!

국내에서 몇몇의 일본아티스트들의 영어앨범이 발매된 적이 있으나, 이번 하이드의 앨범은 현재 일본에서 가장 인기있는 아티스트의 앨범이라는 것에 그 의미가 크다.

2001년 10월 17일 첫번째 싱글 “evergreen” 의 발매를 시작으로, 첫번째 솔로 아티스트로서의 활동을 시작. 일본과 아시아에서의 싱글 발매를 거점으로 하이드의 독자적인 레이블 를 설립하였다. 그의 이 첫번째 싱글은 독특하고 달콤한 속삭임의 창법 + 고요한 거룩한 느낌마저 드는 사운드로 제작되었고, “관”을 소재로 한 한정판의 특이한 싱글 쟈켓으로 커다란 센세이션을 일으켰다.
두번째 싱글, “Angel's tale”은 2001년 12월 22일에 발매, 아름다운 발라드곡으로 하이드의 크리스마스송의 이미지로서 아직까지도 팬들의 가슴에 선명하게 기억되고 있으며, 2002년 2월 27일에는 세번째 싱글, “SHALLOW SLEEP”을 발표, 앞서의 두개의 싱글과곡는 다른 경쾌한 느낌의 제이록 사운드를 명쾌히 살린 명곡으로 꼽히고 있다.
2002년 3월 27일에는 “ROENTGEN (일본어 버전)”을 발매하였고, 이 앨범에 수록된 전곡을 영어로 편곡을 달리하여 재레코딩한 “ROENTGEN / INTERNATIONAL Ver.” 이 7월에 한국, 대만, 홍콩, 싱가폴, 태국을 비롯한 전아시아에서 상대로 발매된다.

런던의 에서 녹음된 이 앨범의 모든 곡들은 하이드 자신에 의해 직접 프로듀스되어 그의 음악적인 컬러가 모두 드러나 있는 앨범이라는 미디어 관계자들의 평가를 받고 있다. 공동프로듀스는 Ian Curnow, 그리고, David Ford 가 담당하였고, 세션에는 유명해외아티스트들이 참여, 기타/Phil Palmer (acoustic & electric guitar), Chris Laurence (double bass), Dave Arch(piano, organ피아노, 오르간), Ian Thomas(drums), 등으로 J-ROCK에 국한되지 않은 INTERNATIONAL적인 한 장의 훌륭한 앨범으로 제작되었으며, 현재에 이르기까지 일본에서만 앨범 70만장, 그리고, 세 개의 싱글을 합쳐 백만장의 판매를 기록하였다. 이 “ROENTGEN” 앨범의 10곡 모두에서 하이드의 신비로운 아티스트적인 이미지와 그룹 활동시에는 감추어져 왔던 음악적 역량을 충분히 감상할 수 있다.

Mesmerizing Rock Ballads!Part2 Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
To make the story short, my favorites of this CD are: A Drop of Color, Oasis, New Days Dawn, Evergreen, and The Cape of Storms of which I think the last three songs fall short of a perfect composition at the quarter finals. In summary, my other favorite tracks are:1 & 13 and the rest are 4 stars iTunes tracks. If you like rock ballads fuse with a little jazz, orchestral music with violin, saxophone, piano and accordion, then get it. Hyde is truly one of the most talented musicians with the best vocal. This CD is my latest greatest find and you can tell that I'm his fan. (Note: the word 'conception' should be 'perception' in my last review.) So, don't miss it!

There is no shortage of nice comments on this CD. It got the very best from me. Actually I don't know where to begin. I discovered Hyde from listening to L'Arc~en~Ciel's CDs because I like some of their music which is atmospheric and soothing. I like Hyde's voice which is clear, gentile, strong and captivating, the best there is for a rocker and balladeer. He has wild vocal range. The way he slides in and out of his notes is not my favorite type of style from any singer, but this CD changes my conception. It was totally MESMERIZING the first time I listened to it and still is! To be continued..........

I have to say that this album has really impressed me.
The music is great, and the songs Drop of Colour, Shallow Sleep, Secret Letters...are amazing!
Although Hyde's english isn't the best..lol..the album is totally worth buyin'.

I love Hyde. I first saw him in "Moon Child" and looked up everything I could find on him. I think he is a fascinating personality and look forward to catching his show in California in July. For those asking about 'Roentgen' it's not a what, it's a who. Roentgen was a German scientist who discovered xrays when experimenting on vacuum tubes in 1895. It makes sense when you see an xrayed image on the cover. Anyway, thought I would include that.

I'd probably say the Japanese version of ROENTGEN is the best copy, but having this still really makes me happy. I just received it in mail today and listened to it and was surprised. His english isn't that great (sometimes hard to understand), but that doesn't matter, really, when you hear the music and read the lyrics. This man is TALENTED as all hell; seriously. The music's wonderful, the lyrics are both emotional, and his voice is very, very nice.

Overall, I'd say this version deserves an 8; that might be low by some people's standards, but I think it's a good grade; maybe an 8.7 would be more precise for the grade. 4 stars is quite bad for how I feel for it; it deserves several other slivers of a star, actually.
